  • Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong backed Jensen Huang’s open-weight AI initiative, arguing specialized enterprise models can outperform general-purpose frontier systems.
  • NVIDIA’s open AI letter gained support from Meta, Microsoft, IBM, Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and Jack Dorsey across industries.
  • Huang’s proposal promotes wider AI access while recognizing security risks and encouraging researchers to strengthen safeguards through collaborative development efforts.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has endorsed NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang’s vision for open-weight artificial intelligence, arguing that businesses could achieve stronger results by adopting specialized AI models. According to Huang’s first post on X, open-weight systems can strengthen American AI leadership while giving companies greater flexibility to build enterprise solutions.

According to Huang’s post on X, NVIDIA joined Meta, Microsoft, IBM, and several other technology companies in signing an open letter titled Open Weights and American AI Leadership. The letter argues that open-weight models expand access to advanced AI, encourage competition, and support innovation across the technology sector.

Armstrong welcomed that approach and revealed that Coinbase is already moving more of its internal workloads toward open-weight models. He explained that the company believes customized AI systems can outperform general-purpose frontier models in specific business environments.

Moreover, Armstrong emphasized that enterprise AI becomes more effective when companies train models using proprietary operational data. He noted that organizations can create specialized tools designed for their own workflows instead of relying solely on publicly available models.

Armstrong says specialized AI can outperform general models

According to Armstrong’s post on X, an AI model trained on more than 100,000 Coinbase compliance cases could perform regulatory work better than a frontier model without that experience. He explained that targeted training allows businesses to build experts for specific functions instead of depending on broad AI systems.

Additionally, Armstrong argued that open-weight models provide companies with greater control over deployment and customization. That flexibility allows businesses to improve accuracy while keeping sensitive internal information within their own environments.

Meanwhile, Huang compared the current AI landscape with the rise of open-source software during the 1980s. He argued that open-weight models could create a similar foundation for innovation by allowing developers and businesses to build upon shared technology.

However, the letter also acknowledged that open-weight AI carries security risks and potential misuse. Even so, the signatories argued that wider access enables researchers and security experts to identify vulnerabilities and strengthen safeguards more effectively.

Industry leaders support Huang’s open AI initiative

Several technology leaders also welcomed Huang’s proposal following his first post on X. Tesla CEO Elon Musk publicly supported the initiative and described Huang’s position as the right direction for artificial intelligence development.

According to posts on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also backed maintaining American leadership across both open-source and proprietary AI models. Meanwhile, Block co-founder Jack Dorsey described the initiative as an excellent step for advancing the broader AI ecosystem.

Furthermore, the responses highlighted growing support for open-weight AI across both the technology and cryptocurrency industries. Coinbase’s endorsement also reflects how digital asset companies increasingly view artificial intelligence as an important part of their long-term business strategy.

Conclusion

Armstrong’s endorsement places Coinbase among the companies supporting wider adoption of open-weight artificial intelligence. According to Huang’s initiative, businesses can benefit from specialized AI models that deliver stronger enterprise performance while promoting broader technological innovation.
