@Coinbase CEO @brian_armstrong has once again put a number on Bitcoin's long-term trajectory, telling CNBC that $BTC reaching $400,000 by 2030 remains his base case. Speaking on CNBC's Squawk Box Asia, Armstrong was asked whether he still expects the largest cryptocurrency to reach that level while it trades below $80,000, to which he replied: "I do think that that's a reasonable target by 2030."
Halving Cycles as the Core Driver
Armstrong's case is built on Bitcoin's well-established four-year market structure. His argument is partly based on Bitcoin's historical market cycles. Bitcoin has traditionally gone through periods of rapid appreciation, extreme enthusiasm, major corrections, and then another accumulation period before the next major rally. According to Armstrong, the latest downturn has already lasted roughly a year, which he considers consistent with the historical pattern.
Historically, halvings have been followed by price surges within 12 to 18 months, suggesting a potential peak in 2029 or early 2030. Armstrong also believes the current cycle low is already behind the market. He cited Bitcoin's recovery from a low of $57,717 on July 1, 2026 as a sign that the last market cycle has bottomed out, adding: "I personally believe that the bottom is in on Bitcoin in this most recent cycle."
A Scaled-Back but Still Ambitious Target
It is worth noting that the $400,000 call represents a more conservative stance than Armstrong held previously. The prediction is notable because Armstrong was considerably more bullish last year. In 2025, the Coinbase chief said Bitcoin could reach $1 million by around 2030, citing regulatory clarity, government adoption, and institutional demand through ETFs.
Even at $400,000, the math is demanding. Armstrong's target demands a 51% annual growth rate, well above Bitcoin's historical 33.6% compound annual growth rate.At Bitcoin's actual historical growth rate, the coin would land near $250,000 by 2030, still a strong return for buyers at current prices. Market sentiment remains cautious in the near term: Polymarket shows a 46% probability that Bitcoin dips below $70,000 before 2027, with an 18% chance of revisiting $60,000.
Armstrong has been clear that the prediction carries no guarantees, and the statement is a personal opinion and not an official Coinbase projection. Still, coming from the head of one of the world's largest crypto exchanges, it is a call the market will find hard to ignore.
