Coinbase announced in a blog post published October 7, 2026 titled “Coinbase Is Building the Most Complete Trading Platform” that its integration of Deribit, the options exchange it acquired, is now complete, giving rise to what the company is calling Coinbase Global Exchange.
According to the post, the combined platform connects clients to more than $30 billion in bitcoin options open interest as of September 30 and over $1 trillion in trading volume processed annually, positioning Coinbase to compete more directly in a derivatives market the company says has historically accounted for roughly 80% of global crypto trading activity. The integration brings multi-leg options execution, strategy builders and cross-portfolio margin offsets designed to reduce collateral requirements for traders running both spot and derivatives positions.
The announcement also detailed the role of Coinbase Financial Markets, a US-regulated futures commission merchant the CFTC authorized in May 2026 to connect American clients to global crypto derivatives markets. Coinbase said the specific combination of regulatory standing and corporate structure the CFTC required for that authorization is one “Coinbase uniquely satisfies,” underscoring the regulatory groundwork behind the launch.
Coinbase said traders will be able to access up to 10x leverage on major assets and 5x leverage on other supported assets through the platform’s spot margin lending capability, with improved fee tiers available once a trader’s qualifying volume reaches $10,000. The company framed the unified risk management across derivatives and spot trading as a central benefit, letting institutional and active retail traders manage exposure from a single account rather than juggling separate venues for options and spot positions, a structural change Coinbase argues will reduce the collateral fragmentation that has historically pushed sophisticated traders toward offshore derivatives venues.
Notably, Coinbase also said its original Coinbase Pro platform, discontinued in 2022 in favor of a unified retail-and-pro experience, will return at year-end as a dedicated professional trading venue. The move suggests Coinbase is betting that sophisticated traders want a separate, streamlined interface distinct from its mainstream consumer app, even as the exchange consolidates its spot and derivatives infrastructure under the new Global Exchange umbrella.
