Coinbase has made an application to the CFTC to provide 24/5 perpetual futures on US stocks individually.
The list might contain 50 to 60 stocks, among which Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, and Nvidia.
Coinbase Derivatives has officially submitted a proposal to the CFTC seeking approval to bring perpetual futures. These are linked to the US stocks individually in the American derivatives market. These outmatch traditional futures, as perpetual contracts are ones that do not expire. It would give eligible users and traders 24/5 access and exposure to stocks without owning the underlying shares. The users can easily maintain their positions without any contract rollover hassle.
Coinbase is looking forward to expanding its existing US perpetual futures idea into separate individual equities. The products that were proposed remain classified under single-stock futures in the CFTC filing that is yet to be approved. This plan would extend the derivatives by providing things beyond the crypto markets. Also, this would build a structure that combines trading and crypto derivatives into the regulated US markets.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Coinbase’s initial plan is to roughly offer 50 to 60 single-stock perpetual contracts. The lineup includes companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, and Nvidia.
These would allow eligible users and traders to access the individual stocks through these derivatives and not by purchasing any underlying shares. Also, regulatory approval of the futures is a must before the launch of the product in the US markets.
The company has already rolled out its products in countries other than the USA. Coinbase made the launch of stock perpetual futures on an international level in March. This international launch covers US stocks and indices. Companies included in this contract are Apple and Nvidia. Coinbase has announced that these products are not available for US individuals.
Coinbase Moves Forward with Its Plan for Security Futures
The most recent filing with the CFTC comes just after one more regulatory move by Coinbase Derivatives. The company filed its Form 1-N with the Securities and Exchange Commission on September 1. This form aims to register the exchange as a national securities exchange to be used in offering security futures. From the two filings, one can see that Coinbase is trying out other ways of creating derivatives of traditional financial assets.
Coinbase already provides perpetual futures for eligible cryptocurrency markets in the United States. With regard to these new stock contracts, they will take the same product offering model to individual stocks. The launch is still pending regulatory approval.
