Options Trading Comes to the Coinbase App

@Coinbase has extended its push into traditional finance by launching zero-commission equity options trading directly on its main platform. U.S. users can now trade call and put options on a selection of popular American stocks without paying the fees that typically accompany options contracts on conventional brokerages.

The move builds on a broader equities rollout that began in early 2026. Coinbase fully rolled out stock trading to all U.S. users following a limited launch in December 2025, giving customers access to over 8,000 stocks and ETFs with 24/5 commission-free trading. The addition of options contracts takes that offering a step further, giving retail traders a more complete set of instruments within a single account.

The platform incorporates native risk models and margin management tools, so traders can handle traditional derivatives alongside spot cryptocurrency positions without switching between apps or brokerage accounts. Equity options support covers Level 1 and Level 2 trading on U.S. stocks directly within Coinbase's Simple and Retail Advanced Trade interfaces, with the experience including an equities order form, time-in-force options, an L2 order book, and NBBO display, available to customers holding a Coinbase Capital Markets brokerage account.

Part of the Broader "Everything Exchange" Strategy

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has been publicly championing the vision of an "everything exchange," a platform that handles crypto, stocks, options, and tokenized real-world assets under one roof. The options launch is a concrete step in that direction, narrowing the gap between what Coinbase offers and what a full-service brokerage provides.

Coinbase has described the rollout as part of its plan to merge traditional financial markets and digital assets under its "Everything Exchange" vision. That strategy has moved quickly in 2026. The exchange has expanded its push beyond crypto and secondary-market stock trading into the primary market, following its earlier rollout of pre-IPO derivatives.

For users, the practical appeal is straightforward: managing a diversified portfolio across equities and crypto in one place, with a unified margin and risk framework, removes friction that has historically pushed active traders toward separate platforms. By eliminating commissions on options, Coinbase is competing directly with retail-focused brokerages that have long used zero-fee structures to attract and retain customers.
