TLDR:

  • Coinbase and Stablecore will bring digital asset custody, trading, and payments to community banks.
  • Stablecore’s platform already integrates with core banking systems at over 3,000 US institutions.
  • Amarillo National Bank in Texas is already live, giving the partnership a working early example.
  • Banks keep their own brand and customer relationships while offering crypto services directly.

Coinbase and Stablecore have partnered to bring stablecoin and digital asset services into local banking apps. The deal reaches thousands of community banks and credit unions nationwide.

It integrates regulated custody, trading, and payment tools into platforms banks already run. Smaller institutions can now offer crypto products without rebuilding their technology stack. Stablecore, which works only with community and regional banks, will manage the integration.

How the Partnership Works

Coinbase and Stablecore designed the arrangement so banks avoid running a separate crypto platform. Stablecore handles orchestration across a bank’s core, digital, and compliance systems. Coinbase supplies the regulated custody and exchange services behind those integrations.

The rollout is already underway at several institutions, including Amarillo National Bank in Texas. That early deployment gives the partnership a working example ahead of a wider push. Stablecore’s existing footprint already reaches more than 3,000 US banks and credit unions.

Alec Lovett, Head of Infrastructure Business at Coinbase, addressed the shift directly. “Community banks and credit unions shouldn’t have to choose between staying local and staying current,” he said.

Lovett added that the partnership helps put smaller institutions “on the cutting edge of payments technology.” He said the goal is cheaper, faster money movement for the communities these banks serve.

Alex Treece, Co-Founder and CEO of Stablecore, echoed that view. “Banks and credit unions should not have to move to completely new technology platforms to support digital assets for their clients,” he said. Treece added that Stablecore built its platform “to bring together all of the pieces so they don’t have to.”

What It Means for Banks and Customers

Banks keep full control of the customer relationship throughout this arrangement. Digital asset products appear under each bank’s own brand rather than a third-party label.

Deposit and lending relationships stay with the local institution instead of shifting elsewhere. This structure lets banks modernize their offerings while protecting customer trust.

Customers of participating banks will be able to buy, sell, and hold digital assets. They can also make payments and stake assets through their existing banking app.

Staking gives customers a familiar entry point into crypto activity. No separate account or new provider relationship is required for these features.

For community and regional banks, the partnership offers a real way to compete. Access to digital asset infrastructure had previously favored larger banks with bigger budgets.

Now smaller institutions can offer similar services under their own name and terms. That shift could reshape how local banking customers first encounter digital assets.

Coinbase framed the announcement on social media by noting that finance is moving onchain. The company said crypto and stablecoins are coming to local bank apps soon. That framing places this partnership within a broader shift already underway across banking.
