Coinbase stock futures could give US traders 24/5 leveraged exposure to individual equities without owning shares. Coinbase Derivatives filed the proposed contracts with the CFTC on September 18. The regulator classifies them as security futures products and lists approval as pending. Trading cannot begin until federal reviews are complete.
Coinbase Stock Futures Filing Covers Major US Equities
The filing seeks approval for cash-settled perpetual futures tied to liquid US-listed shares and ETFs. The Wall Street Journal reported an initial slate of 50 to 60 stocks. Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, and Nvidia are among the expected companies.
Coinbase plans a launch this year if regulators approve the products. Each contract provides price exposure without share ownership, voting rights, or dividends.
Coinbase stock futures would fall under joint jurisdiction of the CFTC and SEC. That framework includes central clearing, cross-market surveillance, coordinated trading halts, and position limits.
Coinbase Derivatives filed SEC Form 1-N on September 1 for security-futures exchange registration. The CFTC submission uses Apple as its representative contract specification.
Coinbase Stock Futures Use Hourly Funding and Cash Settlement
Unlike dated futures, the proposed contracts have no scheduled last trading day. Hourly funding payments would keep each contract close to its underlying share price.
When a contract trades above spot, long positions pay short positions. The payment direction reverses whenever the futures price falls below spot. Coinbase caps the hourly funding rate at plus or minus 0.10%.
Coinbase stock futures would trade from Sunday at 8:00 p.m. ET through Friday at 5:00 p.m. ET. The reference index would remain active throughout that same window. Nodal Clear would centrally clear the contracts and serve as counterparty.
Margins and leverage limits have not been published. Perpetual contracts can amplify gains, losses, and recurring holding costs. Investors would receive cash-settled market exposure rather than the protections or benefits attached to direct stock ownership.
Coinbase already offers regulated crypto perpetuals domestically and stock perpetuals to eligible non-US traders. It launched the international equity product in March. The proposed US stock contracts remain unavailable until regulators approve them.
