Key takeaways

  • CoreWeave stock loses over 22% in one week
  • Bond yields exceed 16% amid growing debt concerns
  • Short sellers gain $806 million as investors diverge

CoreWeave stock (NASDAQ: CRWV) plunged more than 22% this week as investors questioned whether the Nvidia-backed AI cloud provider can sustain its enormous borrowing requirements.

Shares fell over 8% in early trading on October 16, putting the company on course for its steepest weekly decline in more than 11 months. Meanwhile, the yield on its October 2031 dollar bond briefly climbed above 16% on Thursday.

CoreWeave's $50 Billion Debt Raises Alarm as Bond Yields Hit 16%

CoreWeave faces approximately $50 billion in reported debt exposure as borrowing costs rise across the AI infrastructure industry.

Its latest quarterly filing separately listed $35.6 billion in total indebtedness as of June 30. The difference reflects the importance of distinguishing reported financial debt from broader obligations and market-data estimates.

CoreWeave relies heavily on external financing to acquire GPUs and construct data centers before collecting the full value of long-term customer contracts.

That model becomes more expensive when investors demand higher yields.

The company's October 2031 bond briefly yielded more than 16%, while its market price declined approximately three cents on the dollar during the week.

Investors have also demanded more compensation for default risk. CoreWeave's credit-default-swap spreads recently exceeded 1,000 basis points.

Importantly, higher secondary-market bond yields do not immediately increase interest payments on existing fixed-rate debt. They indicate potentially higher refinancing costs and deteriorating market confidence.

The sharp decline created substantial profits for investors betting against CoreWeave.

According to ORTEX data cited by Reuters, short sellers made approximately $806 million on October 14, when CRWV dropped 15.5%.

CoreWeave has lost roughly one-fifth of its market value this month, wiping out approximately $9.6 billion in shareholder value.

However, not every investor is selling.

Cathie Wood's ARK Invest purchased more than 381,000 CoreWeave shares across two trading sessions. Retail investors also bought approximately $66 million worth of stock this week, their second-largest weekly net purchase on record, according to Vanda Research.

Some Wall Street analysts remain optimistic despite the bond-market turmoil.

Evercore maintained its Outperform rating, arguing that elevated secondary-market bond yields do not necessarily mean CoreWeave's underlying business model has stopped functioning.

Can CoreWeave's $104 Billion Backlog Support Its Debt?

CoreWeave has previously reported approximately $104 billion in contracted revenue backlog, reflecting substantial future demand for its computing infrastructure.

However, backlog is not immediately available cash. Revenue must be recognized as services are delivered, while financing, electricity and infrastructure expenses arise throughout the investment cycle.

The company's borrowing pressures have already attracted wider attention. Earlier this week, Elon Musk reacted to the deterioration in CoreWeave's bond market.

The weakness has also spread to competing AI infrastructure companies.

Nebius fell 6.4% during Friday's trading, while IREN declined 5.5% and Applied Digital lost 4.2% in the same reported snapshot.
