Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh rattled crypto markets on Friday after delivering his first keynote at the central bank's annual Jackson Hole symposium in Wyoming. Warsh declared inflation the Fed's biggest problem but left investors to figure out for themselves when officials will act."While this summer's readings were better than expected, they do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved," Warsh said.
Warsh expressed concern about elevated inflation while hinting that rates could need to move higher, but avoided committing to either forward guidance or a clear reaction function. The break from tradition reinforces one of his biggest changes at the Fed: dialing back communications to markets and the public about the central bank's future plans.Warsh has presided over two policy meetings since taking office and left the benchmark rate unchanged at both, holding it in a range of 3.50% to 3.75%.
The consumer price index shows prices have risen 3.4% over the twelve months ending in July, while the Fed's preferred measure puts inflation at 3.7% during that period. One analyst said Warsh "opened the door to a Fed rate hike," adding that a hike probably won't come in September but could arrive by October or December.
$490 Million in Liquidations as Bitcoin Slides
The speech hit crypto hard. Total market capitalisation fell 2.4% to $2.63 trillion on Friday, with $BTC down 3.3% to around $77,700. Liquidations reached $490 million over 24 hours according to CoinGlass data, with nearly three-quarters of those being long positions, as market pricing tilted toward a September rate hike.
"What's driving a lot of the volatility in the rates market is uncertainty around how the Fed is going to respond to inflation," said Ian Kresnak, senior investment strategist at Vanguard. A CNBC survey of 31 economists, strategists and investors showed 80% said Warsh should explain his economic views in more detail. The absence of that clarity on Friday proved costly for leveraged traders.
The selloff is a reminder of how exposed crypto remains to macro policy shifts. With no rate guidance on the table and inflation still running well above the Fed's 2% target, markets face a prolonged period of uncertainty heading into the autumn policy meetings.
