CryptoCompass editorial visual for markets coverage.

Key Insights:

  • Wells Fargo is discussing a potential crypto-liquidity arrangement with Kraken parent Payward.
  • Payward could provide liquidity supporting Wells Fargo’s digital-asset trading if the companies reach an agreement.
  • The talks remain preliminary, while Payward already has institutional infrastructure agreements with Nasdaq and Singapore Gulf Bank.

Crypto news focused on Wells Fargo on Oct. 7 after reports that the bank was discussing a potential digital-asset liquidity relationship with Payward. The Wyoming-based company is the parent of Kraken and operates institutional trading infrastructure through businesses including Kraken Prime and Payward Services.

Under the potential arrangement, Payward would provide liquidity supporting Wells Fargo’s crypto trading activity. The negotiations remain ongoing, and neither company has announced a final agreement.

Crypto News: Wells Fargo and Payward Discuss Crypto Liquidity

The discussions place Wells Fargo and Payward around a specific digital asset trading function. Under the potential arrangement, Payward would provide liquidity for digital asset transactions that Wells Fargo could use.

However, in this latest crypto news, the talks remain preliminary and could still end without an agreement. People familiar with the matter did not indicate that the companies had finalized the terms.

The discussions also involve Payward’s role within the broader institutional infrastructure supporting digital assets. Crypto exchanges can provide banks and institutional investors with access to trading venues.

Meanwhile, Coinbase Prime provides one example of this structure. The crypto news also touches on the fact that the platform aggregates liquidity across multiple markets. Kraken also offers banks technology that allows them to incorporate crypto trading without building the infrastructure themselves.

That existing model provides context for the proposed Wells Fargo arrangement. In this case, however, the discussions specifically concern Payward supplying crypto liquidity to the bank.

Kraken Parent Payward Expands Institutional Infrastructure

Payward has also developed other institutional arrangements involving digital asset settlement and liquidity. In earlier crypto news, the company integrated SGB Net, the real-time clearing network operated by Bahrain-based Singapore Gulf Bank.

That integration initially supported U.S. dollar settlement for a selected group of clients. Additional currencies were planned under the arrangement.

At the same time, Singapore Gulf Bank began onboarding Kraken Prime as a liquidity source for its digital asset offerings. Kraken Prime operates as Payward’s prime brokerage arm. SGB Net launched in 2025. The network now processes more than $20 billion in monthly fiat transactions.

Separately, Payward has held discussions with custody banking company BNY over a broader potential partnership. Two people familiar with those talks said the discussions could cover several areas.

Those areas include crypto products, custody, wealth management, trading, payments, and financial-market infrastructure. The potential services would be provided through Payward Services, the company’s business-to-business platform.

The discussions with BNY in this crypto news also involve infrastructure comparable to an element of Payward’s agreement with Nasdaq.
