OKX flags nearly 49,000 accounts as AI fraud tools block millions
@okx says its fraud defenses stopped $26.3 million in scam-related losses during the first half of 2026 by intercepting suspicious transfers before funds ever left the platform. The exchange also protected more than $1.1 billion in customer assets belonging to over 500,000 users during the same period. Nearly 49,000 accounts were flagged through AI systems monitoring for compromised devices and social engineering attempts in real time.
OKX has expanded its use of artificial intelligence to monitor blockchain activity for patterns linked to compromised devices, account takeovers, and social engineering attacks. The broader threat landscape makes that investment hard to argue with. OKX's own H1 2026 Web3 Security report, produced jointly with SlowMist and OtterSec, recorded 182 publicly disclosed security incidents across the industry totalling $956 million in losses, a 50% rise in incident volume compared with the same period in 2025.
Earlier this year, OKX deepened its fraud prevention capabilities by partnering with Chainalysis. OKX adopted Chainalysis Alterya to help protect customers by preventing transfers to known scam destinations before funds leave the platform. Chainalysis estimates that $17 billion in crypto was stolen by scammers in 2025, and scams that used AI tools such as voice cloning and deepfake impersonation were 4.5 times more profitable than traditional scams.
Banking-grade controls come to crypto withdrawals
OKX is pushing to have crypto security measured against banking-sector standards. The exchange has introduced a set of user-controlled safeguards: facial verification on large withdrawals, nighttime withdrawal locks, and a 24-hour holding period before any newly added address can receive funds.
Chief Compliance Officer Jonathan Brockmeier framed the case for centralised custody plainly: "Self-custody puts a lot on the user and asks them to be their own security engineer." He added that OKX offers a secure alternative, with a full-time global team and layered AI defenses that flag suspicious activity before the customer is ever aware of it.
OKX is also seeking to grow its U.S. footprint among both institutional and retail customers after launching there in 2025. Earlier this year, Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, made an investment in OKX at a $25 billion valuation.
