Blockchain security has traditionally been associated with smart contract vulnerabilities and protocol exploits. While those risks remain, the industry is beginning to face a different type of challenge—one that targets people rather than code.

According to Michael Coates, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at the Solana Foundation, many recent security incidents have originated from compromised credentials, fake identities, and social engineering attacks instead of weaknesses within blockchain networks. As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, those threats are expected to become even more convincing and harder to detect.

How AI Is Changing Crypto Scams

Artificial intelligence is transforming the way cybercriminals operate. Tools capable of generating realistic voices, videos, and written messages have made impersonation attacks significantly more sophisticated than traditional phishing attempts.

Attackers can now imitate executives, customer support agents, or trusted contacts with increasing accuracy, making it more difficult for users to distinguish legitimate communication from fraud. As these technologies become more accessible, AI-driven scams are expected to become a growing concern across the crypto ecosystem.

Rather than breaking blockchain protocols, many attackers are focusing on manipulating users into voluntarily giving away access to wallets, accounts, or sensitive information.

Why Smart Contracts Are No Longer the Only Concern

Although smart contract exploits often attract the most attention because of the value involved, they no longer represent the only major security risk facing the industry.

Coates noted that many attacks begin with operational security failures, including compromised private keys, leaked credentials, or weaknesses in internal processes. In these cases, blockchain technology performs as designed, while the security failure occurs elsewhere.

This shift highlights the importance of viewing blockchain security as part of a broader cybersecurity strategy rather than focusing exclusively on decentralized infrastructure.

Building Security Beyond the Blockchain

As AI-generated scams become increasingly persuasive, security experts argue that protecting users should not depend solely on their ability to recognize suspicious activity.

Organizations are instead encouraged to adopt layered security measures, including stronger identity verification, multi-factor authentication, transaction confirmations, and stricter access management. These safeguards can help limit potential damage even if a user falls victim to a sophisticated scam.

Designing systems that remain resilient despite human error is becoming just as important as developing secure blockchain protocols.

Preparing for the Next Generation of Threats

Beyond AI-powered fraud, the industry is also preparing for longer-term challenges such as quantum computing, which could eventually affect today's cryptographic standards.

While the timeline for practical quantum threats remains uncertain, Coates believes blockchain organizations should begin adopting post-quantum security strategies before those risks become reality.

The crypto industry has spent years strengthening blockchain infrastructure, but the next phase of security will extend well beyond smart contracts. As AI reshapes the threat landscape, success will increasingly depend on how effectively platforms protect users, manage digital identities, and build security into every layer of the ecosystem.
