CRCL, MSTR, COIN, HOOD and Other Crypto Stocks See Premarket Selloff
Strategy (MSTR), Coinbase (COIN), Circle Internet (CRCL), and Robinhood (HOOD) were down almost 3% to 5% on September 15. Crypto stocks reversed almost all Monday’s gains that followed Trump’s approval of ethics rules in Senate Republicans’ final CLARITY Act draft.
Yahoo data shows Circle down about 5.6%, Coinbase about 4.7%, Strategy about 4.6%, and Robinhood slipping almost 3%.CRCL stock closed 7.53% higher to $97.42 on Monday after renewed hopes of the Senate passing the CLARITY Act.
Bitcoin price has also slipped from 24-hour highs near $79,300 to fall below $77,000 in the last few hours. Price is currently trading at $76,887, with trading volume slipping after a recent rebound.
Crypto stocks and Bitcoin price plunge after Brent crude oil prices rose above $108 today. Moreover, the US 10-Year Treasury yield climbed above 5%, reaching its highest since 2007 as the global bond selloff intensified amid surging energy prices, mounting inflation risks, and growing fiscal concerns.
Markets also braced for a Fed rate hike this week, the first since 2023. As CoinGape reported earlier, JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs now expect a Fed rate hike of 25 bps this week.
CLARITY Act Witness Last-Minute Hurdles
The US Senate is scheduled to vote at 2:15 p.m. ET on cloture on the motion to proceed to H.R. 3633. This is not a final vote to pass the CLARITY Act.
Invoking cloture takes 60 votes. Republicans hold 53 seats, so the bill needs support from Democratic Senators. Failure would likely sideline the CLARITY Act for the rest of this Congress, given the narrow window before midterms.
Democrats rejected Republicans’ crypto bill text due to ethics rules, causing crypto stocks to tumble. Senators Mark Warner and Elizabeth Warren claimed the language around ethics provisions and state AG power is vague. She added that they failed to cover President Trump or his family’s crypto interests adequately.
Meanwhile, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged passage, with Garlinghouse noting the Senate decision will affect midterm election vote.
