The Dispute Over Token Sales

A public disagreement has broken out between Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the founder of free education platform Giggle Academy, and memecoin developer Brian Sumner over how the charity handles donated tokens.

Sumner, who is behind the Mame and Koma memecoins, said he sent 2% of his token supply, worth roughly $165,000, to Giggle Academy's wallet with the expectation that it would be sold. His objection was not to selling, but to the manner of selling. He suggested the charity liquidate donations in smaller batches rather than all at once, arguing that bulk sales create unnecessary market disruption.

CZ pushed back, saying Giggle Academy is not a crypto trading team and does not have the infrastructure or expertise to manage token supply with that level of precision. He noted that projects sending donation amounts large enough to move markets should not expect the recipient to handle the disposal perfectly. CZ confirmed that Giggle Academy converts most donated tokens into $BNB near the end of each month to fund its operations. He said the platform intends to keep that process simple and will continue selling the majority of received tokens on a monthly basis.

A Charity Built on Crypto Donations

Giggle Academy has been navigating a growing volume of unsolicited memecoin donations. The organization's position is clear: it sells donated tokens to fund its operations and has no token of its own, nor any plans to launch one.

CZ has said the proceeds from token sales support Giggle Academy's educational mission, which he claims has already reached more than one million children in less than two years. Donations are fully on-chain and traceable, and none of the funds go toward salaries or infrastructure, with CZ covering those costs personally.

Some critics argue that immediately selling donated memecoins could discourage future contributions by creating additional selling pressure. The controversy has also revived broader discussions about CZ's influence on memecoin markets. Sumner, for his part, said he had no complaints about his own donation being sold, framing his suggestion as a practical recommendation rather than a grievance.

The exchange highlights a tension that is becoming more common as crypto charities attract larger and more speculative donations. The question of how and when to liquidate volatile assets, without harming the communities that donated them, has no easy answer.
