A Wallet Turned Into a Meme Coin Magnet
Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao (@cz_binance) says he will stop using one of his public wallets after an unrelenting flood of unsolicited meme coin deposits made routine account management nearly impossible. The announcement came on August 16, when Zhao said he had originally been testing Trust Wallet and struggled to locate his $BNB balance because the address had accumulated so many unwanted tokens.
What followed illustrated a problem unique to high-profile figures in crypto. Every attempt to remove tokens created a fresh wave of attention, as each burn transaction attracted traders and the wider community. As Zhao himself acknowledged, the situation became self-defeating: the more tokens he burned, the more people sent meme coins to the address.
An earlier cleanup attempt in July made the dynamic especially clear. Blockchain analytics platform Lookonchain noticed that Zhao had burned 4,444 tokens from each of two third-party projects on his BNB Chain address. Speculators immediately read this as a hidden on-chain signal, and the market capitalisation of one virtually unknown coin surged from roughly $40,000 to $30 million, a rise of more than 30,000%, while the legitimate version of the token trading on Binance Alpha remained flat.
BNB and 币安人生 to Go to Giggle Academy
Zhao announced he will donate all $BNB and 币安人生 (BinanceLife) tokens held in the wallet to Giggle Academy, the free education nonprofit he founded, and will then cease all activity on the address, effectively converting it into a burn address. Any coins sent there in future will be locked permanently, with no possibility of withdrawal. The total value of the donation has been reported at approximately $960,000.
Giggle Academy aims to provide free educational resources to children around the world, targeting communities that lack access to quality schooling. The platform has already reached over one million students worldwide. CZ has also earmarked all royalties from his 2026 memoir, Freedom of Money, for the initiative.
The episode highlights a structural tension in crypto. Traditional financial accounts do not expose every incoming transaction to the public, but blockchain wallets are different. Anyone can inspect a public address and track transactions on networks such as BNB Chain, a transparency that is one of crypto's defining characteristics but can also create real challenges for public figures.
Following Zhao's retirement announcement for the address, the chart of the surging clone reacted immediately, with a wave of panic selling pushing its market capitalisation back down to $5.26 million.
