Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised the alarm over what his camp describes as a potential breach of his private banking information, after an unsolicited credit was made into one of his personal bank accounts by an unknown individual.

In a press statement released on Thursday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku’s camp asserted that the transfer in question was labelled “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.” They also stated that the transfer came from an individual whom neither Atiku nor his campaign team knows, and that neither party authorised nor solicited the funds.

The account in question is described as strictly private, with details that are not publicly available. That is the central concern the statement raises. If the account details were not in the public domain, how did an unknown individual obtain them?

“If the private banking information of a former Vice President and a leading presidential candidate can be accessed and deployed for reasons yet unknown, then no Nigerian’s financial privacy is safe,” the statement read.

The camp did not name the bank involved but said it is one of Nigeria’s leading commercial banks. It also did not specify the amount credited. What it emphasised is the method: a private account, an unknown sender, and a narration that links the transfer directly to electioneering, raising questions about whether the information was obtained through someone with privileged access to financial systems.

A data breach concern beyond Atiku’s camp with implications

The statement carefully frames the incident not just as a personal violation but as a warning about what it could mean for ordinary Nigerians. If someone with the profile, legal protections, and resources of a former Vice President cannot keep their banking details private, the argument is that no one can.

The camp also flagged the potential danger that comes with exposure of financial information. Knowing that a specific person holds a specific account at a specific bank, and that money flows through it, is information that could be exploited by kidnappers, fraudsters, or other criminals seeking high-value targets.

Shaibu said the relevant security agencies have been put on notice. The statement stopped short of directly accusing any institution or individual, but the phrase “persons with privileged access” points toward the possibility of an insider with access to banking systems or records.

The incident occurs as political activities in preparation for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections ramp up. Atiku’s camp specifically contextualised this situation, labelling the transfer as part of a series of suspicious activities leading up to the elections.
