A story from the early days of XRP has resurfaced, combining an unexpected financial windfall with a devastating family tragedy.

In a video posted on X by crypto enthusiast Minus Wells, Ripple CTO David Schwartz described what he called the “saddest and the happiest story” connected to the XRP Ledger.

Schwartz explained that before Ripple even existed as a company, the people behind the XRP Ledger organized a giveaway on the BitcoinTalk forum. At the time, they had no clear idea how much XRP each participant should receive because the digital asset had no established value.

The team eventually settled on 50,000 XRP per eligible participant. Schwartz said the amount seemed reasonable at the time because the tokens were essentially worthless and nobody knew what they would eventually be worth.

Years later, XRP reached $2, significantly changing the value of those early distributions.

A $95,000 Gift During a Family Tragedy

Schwartz said he later received an email from someone in Canada who had received XRP through the early giveaway. He investigated the story and confirmed that the account was genuine.

The recipient had a 17-year-old sister who was outside a club with her boyfriend when gang members reportedly attacked them. The attackers stabbed both of them, and the teenager died.

Schwartz explained that the family faced the devastating loss of a young daughter while also dealing with the practical financial difficulties that can accompany such a tragedy. Taking time away from work, bringing relatives to Canada, and covering travel costs could mount pressure during an already painful period.

According to Schwartz, the teenager’s brother told their parents that he had $95,000 from his XRP holdings. That money came from the XRP he had received during the early BitcoinTalk giveaway, when the tokens had little to no perceived value.

Schwartz stressed that the money could not remove the pain of losing a family member. However, he said the financial support enabled the family to handle some of the immediate practical difficulties surrounding the tragedy.

Schwartz Reflects on the XRP Community

Schwartz described the account as the saddest and happiest story he had encountered on the XRP Ledger. The tragedy remained central to the story, but the value created by the early XRP distribution provided the family with resources when they needed them.

He also used the story to explain why the XRP community holds significant personal meaning for him. Schwartz concluded his speech by thanking the community and expressing appreciation for the people who have supported the project since its early years.
