The Dogecoin (DOGE) team has cheered on The Salt Road-based merchandise store Tesla Model Doge for accepting crypto payments.

Users can buy hoodies, T-shirts, hats, mugs, tote bags, and iPhone cases on the online merch store by paying with Bitcoin (BTC), Litecoin (LTC), and Dogecoin (DOGE).

The Salt Road develops Via Salaria, a self-custodial crypto ecosystem designed for real-world merchant payments and rewards using BTC, LTC, and DOGE.

It allows businesses and individuals to accept and spend digital assets directly on-chain without an intermediary holding the funds.

Dogecoin was launched on Dec. 6, 2013, by software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, who created it as a parody of the rapid proliferation of cryptocurrencies at the time. Its name and mascot come from the "Doge" meme, built around a 2010 photograph of a Shiba Inu named Kabosu.

Despite its origin as a joke, Dogecoin has built an active online community. Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA) founder and CEO Elon Musk has often lent his public support to the meme coin.

Though DOGE is hardly accepted for retail payments worldwide, it is sometimes accepted for select merchandise purchases, like the Tesla Model Doge.

Note that this merch store is not officially associated with either Musk's automotive and clean energy company or Dogecoin.

With a market cap of $10.7 billion, Dogecoin is the eleventh-largest cryptocurrency. The meme coin was trading at $0.06909 at press time, down 8% in a month.
