The @Dogecoin Foundation has backed the creation of Dogecoin Labs, an independent organization led by CEO Jordan Jefferson that aims to bring the main consumer and developer products of the Dogecoin ecosystem under one roof. The move targets $DOGE use in payments, apps and commerce rather than speculation alone.
What Dogecoin Labs will combine
According to The Block, Dogecoin Labs consolidates the MyDoge wallet, the DogeOS application platform and the Such App payments product. The company will focus on consumer applications, payments, commerce, DeFi and gaming, while the Foundation continues to oversee ecosystem stewardship and open-source development.
The three pieces cover different parts of the stack:
- MyDoge: a wallet that has more than 500,000 users, according to the press release cited by The Block.
- DogeOS: an EVM-compatible platform whose public testnet launched on Sept. 30, aimed at connecting developers with DOGE holders.
- Such App: a merchant tool that adds invoicing and in-person QR payments.
CoinDesk reports that the plan links developers building on DogeOS, holders who find apps through MyDoge, and merchants who accept payments through Such App. It also notes that Such App's beta already supports invoices and in-person QR payments, while its connection to DogeOS is still at the planning stage.
Jefferson said in a statement that no other digital asset has Dogecoin's combination of liquidity, community and cultural reach, and that its potential has barely been tapped.
Backdrop: weak ETF demand
The launch follows a weak run for regulated Dogecoin investment products. Bitwise announced on Sept. 10 that it would liquidate its Dogecoin ETF (NYSE: BWOW), with trading ending on Oct. 14 and the fund liquidating on Oct. 22. Forbes reported that the fund had shrunk to $687,713 in assets by the time of the announcement.
Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley called the outcome "tragic" and pointed to a gap between ETF investors and users of crypto apps, according to a report cited by Bloomingbit. By contrast, Bitwise's Solana Staking ETF has amassed $1.3 billion in net assets.
Dogecoin Labs is betting that utility, not fund flows, will drive the next phase of growth. CoinDesk notes that featured applications are still listed as "coming soon" and that a proposed security link that would let Dogecoin's network verify its applications remains in draft form. Execution will be the test.
