The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) has launched its Tokenization Service, bringing a first set of U.S. Treasuries, stocks and exchange-traded funds onto blockchain rails through @CantonNetwork. The service went live on October 28 and is aimed at the central securities depository that sits at the core of U.S. market infrastructure.

@The_DTCC is working with 20 firms that have signed access agreements. Those include JPMorgan, Citi, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America and UBS , according to CoinDesk. Fidelity Investments and Barclays are also on the list of participants, per the launch announcement, as reported by KuCoin News. DTCC says further users will be onboarded on a rolling basis.

How the Tokenization Service Works

The service lets eligible institutions convert securities held at The Depository Trust Company (DTC), DTCC's depository subsidiary, between traditional and tokenized forms.Tokens are backed 1:1 by securities held at DTC and keep the same rights and investor protections as book-entry securities, while DTC keeps the official books and records.

The tokens are not limited to Canton. The service is available on the Canton Network and on DTCC's private Besu blockchain, initially supporting select large-cap stocks from the Russell 1000 index, ETFs and U.S. Treasury bills, notes and bonds. On Canton, tokens use the CIP-56 standard, while on Besu they use ERC-20.Tokens can move between registered wallets around the clock.

Launch coverage varies on the initial product list. DTCC's launch tear sheet lists 34 securities, up from the 25 outlined in its October 16 overview, according to KuCoin News.

Scale and What Comes Next

The figures involved are large, though the launch is narrower than the headline numbers suggest. DTCC subsidiaries handle clearing, settlement and custody for much of U.S. stock and bond trading, with more than $114 trillion in securities held at the depository. The pool eligible for tokenization is about $30 trillion, only a slice of what DTC holds, according to Crypto Briefing.

The launch follows regulatory and operational steps over the past year. SEC staff granted DTC three years of no-action relief in December 2025, covering Russell 1000 equities, major index ETFs and U.S. Treasuries. On July 15, 2026, DTCC ran its first live production trades using tokenized equities, ETFs and Treasuries already custodied at DTC.

Further expansion is planned. DTCC plans to add more networks during 2027.Its roadmap includes Stellar and Circle's Arc, more eligible securities, and settlement and collateral features such as on-chain netting and digital cash.DTCC President Frank La Salla called the launch the culmination of years of work on regulated securities tokenization.

With the clearing infrastructure for U.S. markets now offering tokenization to its participants, the technology moves from pilot testing into a live, regulated service, although at an initial scale limited to a small group of eligible securities and approved institutions.
