Tesla and SpaceX chief Elon Musk said on Monday he will give one of his SpaceX shares to every child in America next year, a pledge that could run into the billions of dollars if applied nationwide.
Musk made the announcement in a post on X. He gave no detail on how the shares would be delivered, which children would qualify, or whether the gift would go through the government's Trump Accounts program.
He said only that it would be the first of many.
As per the census data, the United States has more than 70 million residents under 18. SpaceX shares closed around $146 on Oct 16, so a rough estimate puts the cost above $10 billion.
Following Shotwell's lead
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell announced in July that she and her husband would give one share to each of more than two million children, a pledge worth about $320 million.

Days earlier, President Donald Trumptold CNBC he expected Musk to donate SpaceX stock to Trump Accounts, which seed $1,000 for children born between 2025 and 2028. Corporate America has piled into the program since launch; Michael and Susan Dell have pledged $6.25 billion.
What is still unclear
SpaceX went public earlier this year at $135 a share, and the price has moved since, so the value of each gift will depend heavily on timing.
Musk has not said whether the shares would come from his personal holdings alone, how they would be held for minors, or what tax treatment would apply.
It is also unclear what later gifts will include.
Musk and crypto
Musk's posts have moved crypto markets before. Dogecoin rose 11.7% in 2022 after he tweeted he would keep supporting it.
Tesla bought $1.5 billion of Bitcoin in 2021, and SpaceX said it would accept Dogecoin as payment. This pledge makes no mention of digital assets or tokenized shares.
SpaceX's IPO filing, however, disclosed 18,712 Bitcoin, bought for about $661 million and worth roughly $1.45 billion in May.
The position has not changed since at least late 2024, the filing says. With Tesla's 11,509 Bitcoin, Musk's two companies hold more than 30,000.
For now, the pledge is a post, not yet a plan. Any crypto link remains speculation unless Musk confirms it.
