Call centers are shrinking for the first time in more than a decade.
Global call-center employment is now 5.3% below its December 2023 peak and has fallen year over year for eight straight quarters, according to an Oct. 6 report.
The bigger change is hiring: entry rates have fallen faster than exits, suggesting companies are simply replacing fewer workers who leave.
Nansen CEO says AI can't replace jobs built on human presence (5:07)
Moving on is not easy. Only 10.8% of former call-center workers landed better-paying roles, while nearly half moved into jobs that typically paid less.
Big companies are already changing how support works. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said AI helped reduce its customer-service workforce from 9,000 to about 5,000. Verizon has also cut thousands of jobs while investing heavily in AI and workforce retraining.
On Tuesday, the world’s richest man showed up with a machine built for exactly this industry.

Musk brings Grok to the call center
Elon Musk, whose fortune is around $1 trillion and whose companies include Tesla, SpaceX, xAI and X, launched Grok Voice 3.0 on Oct. 14.
Popular on TheStreet Roundtable:
xAI says the speech-to-speech model scored 86.9 on Artificial Analysis’ Speech-to-Speech Index, ahead of GPT-Live-1 and Gemini 3.8 Live. It also responds in under one second.
The strongest proof point is already inside Musk’s own empire.
Starlink call centers use Grok Voice to handle about 20,000 calls a day, according to xAI. Roughly 70% are resolved without a human, while one in four sales calls ends in a purchase.
A single AI agent can verify customers, troubleshoot hardware, issue credits and ship replacement equipment.
Grok Voice 3.0 outperforms rival voice models across key benchmarks.

It is also cheaper. Artificial Analysis put Grok Voice 3.0 at about $0.025 per task, versus $0.030 for GPT-Live-1 and $0.055 for GPT-Realtime-2.1. xAI prices its API at $0.08 per minute.
Musk co-founded OpenAI before leaving in 2018 and has since become one of its loudest rivals.
Pricing Grok Voice below OpenAI’s competing models is the latest front in that fight. But this time the battlefield is a customer-service industry that was already shrinking.
