Ethena's USDe is a synthetic dollar, a token designed to hold a $1 value without being backed by dollars in a bank. Ethena Labs launched it in February 2024. Its backing mixes hedged crypto positions with institutional lending, stablecoin liquidity, and tokenized real-world assets. USDe traded at $0.9998 in mid-September, and its supply stands near $4.9 billion.

What Is Ethena's USDe?

USDe works differently from fiat-backed stablecoins such as USDT and USDC.

These stablecoins keep cash and Treasury bills in reserve. USDe started with a "delta-neutral" strategy. Delta measures how much a position's value changes when an asset's price moves. A delta-neutral position has a delta of zero, so its total value stays flat whichever way prices go.

How Does USDe Keep Its $1 Value?

USDe's peg now rests on several types of backing rather than one trade.

The Original Basis Trade

The original strategy involves holding spot crypto while shorting perpetual futures. Perpetual futures, or "perps," are contracts with no expiry date. When markets are bullish, traders holding long positions pay a fee called the funding rate to those holding short positions. Ethena collects that fee as yield.

Lending And Other Backing

Funding rates fall when markets cool, so Ethena spread out its backing. In August, it opened a $1 billion facility with FalconX that puts USDe backing assets into overcollateralized institutional loans. In an overcollateralized loan, the borrower posts more collateral than they borrow. Ethena has also added stablecoin liquidity and tokenized real-world assets.

As of early July, crypto basis positions made up about 1% of USDe's backing, and institutional lending about 6.9%.

What Changed For USDe In September 2026?

Ethena made several changes over the past month.

  • Tokenized equities: On September 25, Ethena announced it would add Binance's tokenized stocks, called bStocks, to its backing and hedge them with Binance's USDT-denominated equity perpetuals. Founder Guy Young called it the most significant expansion of USDe's funding mechanism since launch.
  • Payments app: Ethena Pay, a self-custodial app on Avalanche, lets users spend, transfer, and save USDe, with rates of up to 6% in beta.
  • End of incentives: ENA token incentives tied to USDe ended on September 30, after falling about 85% since 2024.

On October 1, Young said USDe's backing has no direct exposure to stETH or other liquid staking tokens after a security incident at an Ethereum node operator. He said he did not expect any impact on Ethena.

How Does USDe Connect To ENA Tokenomics?

ENA is Ethena's governance token. It traded at $0.273 on September 26.

A fee switch approved in early September sends 95% of net revenue to ENA buybacks once USDe supply reaches $7.5 billion. Ethena also bought the remaining locked tokens from some large seed investors who had been selling ENA. All remaining original investor tokens will unlock at once from October 5, ending monthly VC unlocks. Tokens allocated to the Ethena team stay on their existing vesting schedules.

What Are The Risks Of USDe?

USDe carries risks that fiat-backed stablecoins do not.

Demand has fallen. USDe supply peaked near $15 billion in October 2025 and has since fallen to about $4.9 billion. Lower funding rates reduce yield, which reduces demand. Regulation also limits where USDe can be offered.

In March 2025, Germany's BaFin cited serious deficiencies in Ethena's MiCA licensing, and Ethena left the EU and EEA market. For transparency, Kraken Custody has provided monthly custodian attestations and weekly Proof of Reserves reporting since January 2026.

What Do Analysts Expect?

Standard Chartered, a British bank, published a forecast on September 30. It expects USDe supply to grow eightfold to $40 billion by the end of 2028 and ENA to rise roughly sevenfold to $2. The bank said USDe's newer yield sources currently produce a blended yield of 5.2%.

Conclusion

USDe is a synthetic dollar backed by a mix of hedged crypto positions, institutional lending, stablecoin liquidity, and tokenized real-world assets. Users can spend it through Ethena Pay. Incentives tied to USDe have ended, and buybacks will fund ENA once USDe supply reaches $7.5 billion.
