XRP investor Terrell Williams believes investors may underestimate XRP’s long-term potential because they focus too heavily on its current price action.
In a post on X, Williams compared holding XRP today with investing in a major internet company before the technology reached mainstream adoption. He examined that XRP could gain significant value if institutional adoption accelerates.
Williams acknowledged that some XRP holders have watched the asset trade through extended periods of consolidation. He noted that XRP reached around $3 last year before falling toward the $1.50 area. However, Williams urged investors to assess the financial infrastructure developing around XRP instead of judging its potential solely by its current market price.
Williams sees XRP primarily as a utility-focused asset that can support cross-border money movement. He contrasted that use case with Bitcoin, which he views primarily as a store of value rather than a payment and liquidity asset.
Williams Points to Cross-Border Payments
Williams said XRP could support the movement of trillions of dollars across borders while also facilitating tokenized financial assets. He stated that the existing international financial system still takes too long and costs too much for certain cross-border transactions.
He compared traditional international transfers, which can take several business days and sometimes carry fees of 3% to 5%, with XRP-based transfers that can settle within seconds at a fraction of a penny. Williams acknowledged that financial institutions cannot complete this transition immediately. Banks and other institutions still need to develop the infrastructure that can support wider blockchain adoption.
Williams also argued that XRP may not experience sustained exponential price growth until institutions begin using the asset at scale. In his view, retail activity alone cannot generate the liquidity that XRP would need to support the level of price appreciation that long-term investors expect.
Institutional Adoption Remains the Key Factor
Williams identified institutional adoption as the main factor that could determine XRP’s future performance. He said regulatory developments involving the SEC and CFTC could create more opportunities for institutions to enter the cryptocurrency market. However, he also acknowledged that regulatory clarity does not automatically produce institutional adoption.
Williams also questioned whether institutions would rely exclusively on stablecoins for settlement. He asked whether financial institutions that issue their own stablecoins would consistently use one centralized stablecoin to facilitate transactions with other institutions.
Instead, Williams sees a potential role for a utility-focused asset such as XRP in liquidity and cross-border settlement. He pointed to the infrastructure that has developed around XRP over more than a decade and argued that the market has yet to see the scale of institutional liquidity that he expects.
Williams Says Patience Will Be Important
Williams believes XRP investors need to distinguish between the development of financial infrastructure and the arrival of widespread institutional adoption. He said the existing technology and infrastructure could support substantial liquidity flows, but he does not expect major price expansion before institutions begin deploying that liquidity at scale. If that adoption occurs, he expects the resulting demand to create a substantially different market environment for XRP.
