Federal Reserve official Thomas Barkin emphasized that inflation remains the paramount risk for the central bank, advocating for a measured approach to monetary policy. Barkin noted the inflationary pressures stemming from investments in artificial intelligence, while Beth Hammack suggested that the use of stablecoins by AI agents could mark a significant shift.
Inflation Steady as Demand Stays Strong, Says Barkin
Barkin highlighted that monetary policy is currently near neutral territory, stating that the central issue revolves around the pace of policy progression. Although he does not anticipate inflation to accelerate, he also acknowledged that current conditions have not shown a decrease in inflation levels.
According to Barkin, the cost pressures initiated in the past 18 months by tariffs have become more pervasive. The Fed official noted that businesses report persistent high costs, and feel compelled to pass these increases on to consumer prices.
Barkin assessed the economy as healthy with robust demand, observing that while companies are cautious with hiring, they have not yet resorted to layoffs. He further noted that strong earnings are underpinning a trend of investment and job retention.
AI and Stablecoin Developments Garner Attention
Barkin identified artificial intelligence as a vital component of strong demand, mentioning that infrastructure investments increase inflationary pressures in the short term. While interest rates could slightly constrain these investments, they are not the primary limiting factor. Barkin associated productivity gains not predominantly with AI, but with adaptations to labor shortages that began during the pandemic.
Hammack stated that the utilization of stablecoins by AI agents would signify a substantial transformation.
These remarks suggest that robust demand and ongoing cost pressures could influence the speed of the Fed’s policy actions. AI investments emerge as noteworthy due to their dual impact on inflation and potential shifts in digital payments.
