Floki used International Doge Day to send a message to the Dogecoin community, posting an image that places its helmeted $FLOKI mascot beside Kabosu, the Shiba Inu whose face became the Doge meme. The post from @FLOKI also nodded to the day's motto, "Do Only Good Everyday", whose initial letters spell DOGE.
Kabosu was a Japanese Shiba Inu whose photo became the basis of the Doge meme. Global News reported that her owner, Atsuko Sato, posted the now-famous image to her blog in 2010, and that the dog's side-eyed look was later paired with captions in broken English such as "much wow".
According to CNN, Kabosu became the face of Dogecoin ($DOGE) in December 2013, when the token launched as a tongue-in-cheek response to Bitcoin. Other meme tokens followed, including a Shiba Inu coin.
Kabosu died on May 24, 2024. Sato announced the news on her blog, and CNN reported that the dog was around 18 years old and had been diagnosed with leukemia and liver disease in 2022.
Kabosu's exact date of birth was never known. SoraNews24 reported that she joined Sato's family on November 2, 2008, and that date was designated her third birthday. Her birthday has been celebrated on November 2 each year since. On that basis, the day would have marked roughly her 21st birthday.
The date also ties into the annual event. Japan Travel states that a bronze statue of Kabosu was unveiled in Sakura on November 2, 2023, as part of the inaugural International Doge Day. Fans from around the world gathered in Sakura City, in Chiba Prefecture, for the event. The statue sits in Sakura Furusato Square, a park Kabosu and her owner often visited on walks.
Floki's greeting is a light-hearted gesture between two dog-themed meme communities, and it does not involve any product or token announcement.
