BlackRock, Coinbase, and seven other major companies have formed the Bitcoin Security Consortium to ensure the long-term security of Bitcoin. The consortium will donate a total of $15 million over three years to enhance Bitcoin’s security. The focus of this initiative will be on post-quantum cryptography research, which can counter the potential threats of quantum computing.
Countermeasures Against Quantum Threats
Bitcoin currently relies on elliptic curve cryptography for proof of ownership and transaction authorization. However, a quantum computer powerful enough to run the Shor algorithm in the future could derive a private key from a public key, potentially leading to the theft of funds. While such a quantum computer doesn’t currently exist, the consortium aims to be prepared for such threats.
Independent Funding and Development
The consortium members stated that they would not develop or direct Bitcoin’s protocol, would not support specific changes, and would not speak on behalf of Bitcoin developers. Each company will independently decide where to direct its funds. This indicates that the consortium will operate in accordance with the existing open-source processes of the Bitcoin community.
The Bitcoin Security Consortium plans to provide more funding for developers, researchers, and non-profit organizations. It will also publish materials on Bitcoin security for investors, the public, and the media. These materials will focus on monitoring technical developments rather than creating policy for the network.
