Key Highlights

  • Crude prices extended declines for three consecutive sessions following Saudi Arabia’s announcement of expected pipeline restoration
  • Japan’s central bank implemented rate increases Friday, following similar moves by the Federal Reserve and European Central Bank
  • Declining oil values contributed to dollar weakness, providing additional tailwinds for the yellow metal
  • ETFs backed by the precious metal recorded consecutive inflows for eight trading sessions, ANZ research indicates

Gold prices extended their upward trajectory on Friday, positioning for moderate weekly advances as declining crude prices and a weakening greenback provided momentum for the precious metal.

The yellow metal in spot markets gained 1.0% to settle at $4,385.76 per ounce during morning sessions. Gold contracts for future delivery increased 0.6% to $4,425.20 per ounce. New York-traded futures advanced 0.8% to $4,434.90 during European market hours.

The five-day advance totals approximately 0.9%. The precious metal recovered more than 2% during Thursday’s session following a near six-week trough reached earlier in the week.

Crude markets extended their retreat for a third consecutive session. Saudi officials announced expectations for restoring operations through a critical pipeline in the coming days. Meanwhile, Chinese authorities intensified diplomatic initiatives aimed at curtailing Houthi militant activities, who have strengthened their control over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The decline in oil prices has dampened concerns that energy-fueled inflation would compel monetary authorities to accelerate their tightening campaigns.

Monetary Authorities Continue Tightening Cycle

Japan’s monetary authority implemented rate increases on Friday, citing inflation approaching its 2% annual objective. This action follows comparable policy adjustments from America’s Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank.

The Federal Reserve implemented its initial rate increase in three years during Wednesday’s meeting. ING economists noted that declining crude values have alleviated some upward pressure on the greenback following that policy shift.

Nevertheless, ING analysts also highlighted potential upside scenarios for dollar strength. The Fed’s more aggressive stance has enabled markets to fully incorporate expectations for an additional October increase should inflation figures and energy markets warrant such action.

Greenback strength typically pressures the yellow metal by elevating costs for international buyers. The U.S. dollar benchmark index edged 0.1% higher to 100.38 on Friday.

Exchange-Traded Fund Activity Signals Sustained Interest

Investment vehicles backed by the precious metal monitored by Bloomberg registered substantial capital inflows in recent periods. ANZ research teams noted that assets held in these vehicles expanded across eight consecutive trading sessions.

ANZ researchers also highlighted robust activity in options contracts linked to major gold-backed investment vehicles. This pattern indicates traders maintain active positions in the metal despite elevated interest rates increasing holding costs.

Saxo Bank strategists noted the yellow metal’s strength appears remarkable considering the Federal Reserve recently initiated a fresh tightening cycle while the dollar maintains relative firmness.

They noted this resilience suggests ongoing appetite from market participants who demonstrate reduced sensitivity to conventional relationships between rates, currency values, and precious metal valuations.

Elevated borrowing costs generally amplify the opportunity cost associated with holding the precious metal, which generates no income. This dynamic persists as additional rate adjustments are anticipated throughout the remaining months.

The yellow metal’s capacity to maintain support above the $4,400 threshold despite these challenges has captured analyst attention heading into weekend sessions.
