Gold traded near $4,430 on Tuesday as weaker U.S. economic data reduced expectations for another Federal Reserve rate increase and kept the dollar under pressure. The rally has now pushed XAU/USD into an important technical resistance area, where a breakout could strengthen the medium-term outlook.

Spot gold was up 0.2% at $4,424.28 an ounce at 1:30 a.m. GMT on Aug. 18, extending gains for a third session, while December U.S. gold futures rose to $4,480.90. Markets have shifted toward expecting the Fed to hold rates steady in September after recent labor, inflation and consumer-spending data pointed to softer economic conditions.

July nonfarm payrolls fell by 23,000, while the unemployment rate held at 4.1%. Consumer inflation eased to 3.4% year over year, giving traders less reason to expect an immediate tightening move.

Gold Tests a Major Trendline Confluence

The longer-term XAU/USD chart from Rashad Hajiyev shows gold pressing into the intersection of a descending resistance line and a rising trendline near the current price area. That confluence makes the latest advance more significant than an ordinary short-term rebound.

Gold has recovered sharply from the roughly $4,000 region and is now challenging the descending line that has capped rebounds since the early-2026 peak. Hajiyev argues that a successful breakout could establish a stronger foundation for the coming months.

The chart does not confirm that breakout yet. Gold needs to clear the resistance intersection and remain above it before the structure shifts more convincingly in favor of buyers. A rejection would leave the market vulnerable to another pullback toward the rising support line.

$4,440-$4,450 Becomes the Immediate Test

A shorter-term chart from Mlia.Evans identifies $4,440-$4,450 as the next resistance zone, while $4,400-$4,380 forms the main support area.

The chart shows higher short-term lows as gold holds above $4,400. A clean break through $4,450 would remove nearby resistance and reinforce the larger trendline breakout scenario. Conversely, losing $4,400 would weaken momentum, with the lower part of the $4,380-$4,400 zone becoming important for buyers.

Fed Minutes and UBS Forecast Shape the Gold Outlook

Attention now turns to the Federal Reserve’s July meeting minutes, due Wednesday, Aug. 19. The Fed held its target rate at 3.5% to 3.75% in July, although three policymakers favored a quarter-point increase, making the minutes important for judging how divided officials remain.

The longer-term institutional outlook remains bullish. UBS said Aug. 7 that it expects gold to reach $5,000 an ounce in the first half of 2027, while warning that near-term risks remain.

For now, the gold price prediction hinges on the $4,440-$4,450 resistance area. A confirmed breakout would strengthen the case for continued upside, while failure there could send XAU/USD back toward $4,400 before buyers attempt another advance.
