Gold has now broken below the psychological $4,000 level, which extended one of its weakest stretches in months.
Spot gold fell to roughly $3,975 during the latest session before hovering close to $4,000 again. That leaves the metal sharply lower for the week and puts the market at a level traders are watching very closely.
Rob Mirlach argues that $4,000 is now the line that could determine whether this move was simply a violent flush or the start of a deeper correction.
His framework is straightforward:
- reclaim $4,000 and the drop starts looking more like a liquidation event
- lose $3,975 and the July lows near $3,960 come back into focus
- the next Federal Reserve decision could decide whether pressure continues
Why Gold Is Falling With Stocks
Normally, falling equities and geopolitical tension should help gold.
This time, they are not.
One reason is liquidity.
When hedge funds and other large investors face losses or reduce leverage, they often sell liquid assets to raise cash. Gold is one of the easiest assets to sell quickly.
That helps explain why bullion has been falling alongside equities instead of immediately benefiting from safe-haven demand.
Oil is another problem.
Brent crude remains above $100, keeping inflation concerns elevated. That makes it harder for the Federal Reserve to turn dovish and keeps pressure on non-yielding assets such as gold.
Treasury yields near 5% add to that pressure.
Why $4,000 Matters
The $4,000 level is important both technically and psychologically.
Price has already traded below it, but the next reaction around $3,975-$4,000 should tell us whether sellers are losing control.
If gold quickly reclaims $4,000 and pushes back above roughly $4,020-$4,040, that would be the first sign of stabilization.
If $3,975 fails, the next level is around $3,960.
Below that, $3,900 becomes increasingly relevant.
Gold Price Outlook
Scenario
Gold price path
Bullish recovery
Reclaim $4,000 → $4,040 → $4,075-$4,100
Neutral
$3,975-$4,040 consolidation
Bearish continuation
Lose $3,975 → $3,960 → $3,900
Mirlach’s framing makes sense because $4,000 is now the line separating a possible liquidation flush from a deeper breakdown.
If buyers reclaim it, the current selloff may start looking exhausted.
If they cannot, gold may still have another leg lower before a durable bottom forms.
