Key takeaways

  • Gold rebounds above $4,150 despite accelerating US inflation
  • Falling Treasury yields and weaker dollar support bullion
  • Saxo Bank warns gold's technical outlook remains fragile

Gold prices rebounded more than 1% on October 15, climbing above $4,150 per ounce even as hotter US inflation revived expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates again this month.

Spot gold gained approximately 1.3%to $4,156.58 during Thursday's earlier trading, while December futures rose 1.7% to $4,178.50. The recovery followed Wednesday's sharp selloff, when September's unexpectedly high consumer inflation sent the dollar and Treasury yields higher.

The apparent contradiction has a straightforward explanation: gold is responding not only to inflation expectations but also to falling bond yields, a weaker dollar and growing uncertainty surrounding global technology stocks.

Why Is Gold Rising Despite Higher US Inflation?

Wednesday's US CPI report showed annual consumer inflation accelerating to 3.7%, above economists' expectations and the previous month's 3.4% reading.

The report initially pressured precious metals as investors increased expectations for another Federal Reserve interest rate hike. Gold dropped more than 1%, briefly approaching $4,086 before recovering the following day.

Thursday brought another inflation surprise, with US producer prices climbing 6.3% annually against expectations of 5.4%. Core PPI reached 5.0%, adding to concerns that businesses are facing persistent cost increases.

However, gold's rebound had already begun before the PPI figures were released.

The immediate support came from the US dollar, which weakened approximately 0.5%, and declining Treasury yields. A softer dollar makes gold less expensive for international buyers, while lower yields reduce the opportunity cost of holding an asset that pays no interest.

The surprising movement in gold is partly connected to developments outside the precious metals market.

A broad selloff in artificial intelligence stocks prompted investors to reconsider exposure to expensive technology companies and heavily indebted data center operators. Treasury bonds attracted renewed demand, pushing their prices higher and yields lower.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield fell toward 5.08% during Thursday's morning session, reversing part of the surge triggered by Wednesday's inflation report.

Earlier this month, Treasury yields had climbed above 5.3%, making interest-bearing government bonds increasingly competitive with gold.

The latest reversal helps explain why bullion can appreciate even when inflation data appears unfavorable.

Speaking to Reuters, Saxo Bank commodity strategist Ole Hansen attributed gold's recovery to lower real yields and resilient investment demand, although he cautioned that the technical outlook remained fragile.

That distinction matters because Thursday's gains do not necessarily indicate a lasting reversal. If bond yields resume climbing, gold could face renewed selling pressure.

Gold Price Outlook: Can XAU/USD Recover Toward $4,200?

Gold's next challenge is sustaining its recovery above $4,150 after several sessions of volatility.

Gold Price Level Market Significance $4,250 Higher recovery reference $4,200 Psychological resistance area $4,156 October 15 reference price $4,100 Recent trading support area $4,000 Major psychological support

Levels are reference areas, not guaranteed technical turning points.

Earlier gold market analysis highlighted how rising crude prices could weigh on bullion by reinforcing expectations of tighter monetary policy.

However, physical buying and central-bank demand remain potential sources of support. Coinpaper recently reported that China's gold purchases continued for a 23rd consecutive month in September.

Morgan Stanley has also identified the $4,000 area as a potential gold price floor, citing physical demand and the possibility of lower bond yields.
