Grayscale Chairman Barry Silbert (@BarrySilbert) is pushing back against what he calls an unfair reading of the recent @Zcash security incident, arguing that critics are mischaracterising a successful fix as evidence of weakness.

A Bug Caught Before It Could Do Damage

The Zcash network executed an emergency soft fork after developers discovered a critical security vulnerability in the Orchard shielded pool, the protocol's most advanced privacy layer. The vulnerability was discovered on May 29 by Taylor Hornby, an independent security researcher conducting a protocol audit for Shielded Labs. The Zcash Open Development Lab confirmed the issue was found during routine auditing and security reviews, and the vulnerability was caught before any known exploitation took place. The flaw could have allowed invalid state transitions inside Orchard, potentially enabling double spending within the pool. The bug did not allow inflation of ZEC's total supply, according to the Zcash Foundation.

Silbert, whose Digital Currency Group is one of the most prominent institutional backers of Zcash, framed the episode differently. Rather than treating the disclosure as a red flag, he praised the developer community for identifying and patching the issue, arguing the response demonstrated the underlying strength of the network. Grayscale has separately filed to convert its existing Zcash Trust into a U.S.-listed spot ETF, which would be the first such product for any privacy-focused cryptocurrency.

Hayes Exits as ZEC Slides 30%

Not everyone shares Silbert's confidence. BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes revealed he completely exited his Zcash holdings, saying the Orchard Pool exploit forced him to reassess the network's privacy assumptions. While he described exploitation as unlikely, he argued that the possibility cannot be cryptographically ruled out. Hayes said Zcash's privacy pitch demands stronger assurance than probability alone.

ZEC fell 31.1% on June 5, 2026, as traders reacted to concerns about an exploit affecting the network's Orchard shielded pool.Hayes had previously framed ZEC as part of his "Holy Trinity" trade, a theme linking Zcash with privacy, while Hyperliquid and NEAR Protocol represented other crypto narratives.

The divergence between Silbert and Hayes highlights a broader tension in the privacy coin narrative. For investors buying ZEC as protection from AI surveillance and government monitoring, "unlikely" carries less weight than "provably impossible." Hayes said he remains open to rebuilding his position if future verification efforts restore confidence in Zcash's supply integrity.Shielded Labs is now exploring a network upgrade that would let anyone verify the Zcash supply.
