The Grayscale Zcash ETF (ZCSH) saw $93.56 million in net outflows over the past week, marking the largest weekly withdrawal since the exchange-traded fund launched on NYSE Arca. This exodus comes after a strong run of inflows in its initial weeks, highlighting a sudden change in investor sentiment toward the fund.

Major redemptions after initial surge

ZCSH, which commenced trading on August 25 after the conversion of Grayscale Zcash Trust by Grayscale Investments, offers investors regulated exposure to Zcash (ZEC) through shares in a trust that directly holds the cryptocurrency. The structure allows investors to gain access to ZEC price movements without owning the asset directly or using futures contracts.

After launch, the fund drew strong demand, with net inflows reaching $271 million and assets under management surpassing $500 million by early September. However, recent data shows a stark reversal. On September 30, investors withdrew $30.25 million from ZCSH, followed by an additional $26.93 million on October 2. These substantial redemptions, along with several other withdrawals during late September and early October, have pushed the fund’s net inflows down to about $212.56 million—well below the previous figure of approximately $268 million.

Investors took out $26.93 million worth of ZEC from ZCSH on October 2. This marked the third consecutive day of such outflows, reflecting a decisive change in investor positioning.

Despite the downturn in flows, the fund remains net positive since its launch. Grayscale stated that the ZCSH ETF reached a milestone with over $500 million in assets as of September 8, following heavy inflows across its first two weeks. The current wave of redemptions, however, has diminished the buffer created by earlier momentum.

Analysts attribute part of the outflow trend to broader price action in ZEC, which recently traded around $1,316, according to Crypto With Gopal. The coin now sits within a falling-wedge technical pattern on the four-hour chart, with resistance and support lines narrowing as consolidation continues. Gopal noted that a move above the $1,700 resistance level would be necessary for renewed upside momentum.

Mini dictionary: Falling-wedge pattern, a technical analysis formation where price moves within converging downward-sloping lines, often seen as a potential bullish reversal signal if price breaks above resistance.

Although shifts in ETF flows can influence market perceptions, they do not always reveal the reasons behind investor selling. ZCSH redemptions reduce the fund’s holdings of ZEC, but outflows alone do not confirm sentiment changes in the broader Zcash ecosystem.

Zcash network activity and fund mechanics

On-chain data from October 2 showed 7,113 completed Zcash transactions, including 4,445 transparent-only, 795 shielded-only, and 1,873 mixed transactions. Of these, shielded transactions accounted for 2,668, or 37.5% of the total, reflecting Zcash’s unique privacy features that allow users to select between transparent and shielded transaction modes.

Transaction Type Number of Transactions Share of Total Transparent-only 4,445 62.5% Shielded-only 795 11.2% Mixed 1,873 26.3%

Pool-level network usage data showed 2,458 transactions involving the Ironwood pool, 192 through Sapling, and 92 with Orchard. These numbers represent transaction activity rather than specific ZEC pool balances.

Mini dictionary: Ironwood, Sapling, and Orchard are cryptographic protocols used by Zcash to support its privacy features and ensure that shielded transactions remain confidential while enabling selective transparency for regulatory or user needs.

Grayscale also completed a 3-for-1 forward stock split for ZCSH on September 30, doubling outstanding shares and reducing the price per share, but leaving total investment value unchanged. Split-adjusted trading began immediately after a regulatory filing with the SEC.

Short-term outlook and contrast with debut

Heading into October, the ZCSH ETF maintains net positive flows, though substantially below its mid-September peak. Meanwhile, ZEC is trading near $1,300 as it consolidates. The upcoming days are likely to provide further signals as to whether the recent downtrend in flows aligns with a technical reversal in price.

For ZCSH investors, the contrast between the strong early inflows and the latest record withdrawals marks a significant short-term reversal. Whether this shift persists will depend on broader market sentiment, ZEC price movements, and ETF activity in the days ahead.
