Hashdex has announced it will close its spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) and distribute the proceeds to remaining shareholders. The company will sell the fund’s entire holdings of approximately 225 BTC, with net assets totaling $14.25 million, and return the cash to investors later this month.

Assessment of Market Conditions

The fund issuer disclosed its decision in a filing on Monday, stating that the move follows an evaluation considering several factors. These include the trading liquidity of the fund, operating expenses, and the level of investor interest. Hashdex noted that persistent lower-than-expected demand played a significant role in the decision to shut down the ETF.

The ETF, which trades under the DEFI ticker on NYSE ARCA, entered the market after 10 competing spot Bitcoin ETFs had already been launched. While analysts previously identified a potential niche for the fund, its late entry proved challenging in a highly competitive environment.

Performance and Industry Response

Since its introduction in March 2024, the fund has struggled to attract strong inflows compared to its competitors. For example, asset data from SoSoValue indicate that the highest level the Hashdex ETF reached was $17.54 million in net assets, achieved on May 9, 2025. In comparison, the WisdomTree Bitcoin Trust (BTCW) currently reports net assets of $140.37 million, highlighting the challenges faced by newer entrants.

Several analysts have commented on the difficulties new ETFs encounter in establishing a foothold. Bloomberg Senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas remarked in March 2024 that, given favorable market conditions, a competitive fee structure could help the fund gain traction even as a late arrival.

Eric Balchunas stated that the market environment offered such promise at the time that, even with a delayed launch, the Hashdex spot Bitcoin ETF could see investor interest if fees were attractive enough.

However, the current landscape has left limited room for smaller funds to compete, ultimately leading Hashdex to opt for liquidation.

Broader Strategies in Digital Asset Access

As the market for digital asset ETFs continues to challenge new participants, investors searching for streamlined access to both cryptocurrencies and traditional assets have begun exploring alternative platforms. A growing number of platforms now offer solutions that bring together real-world assets and digital currencies under one roof. For instance, seamless technical integration allows users to trade leading US equities and commodities alongside cryptocurrency holdings, simplifying portfolio management.

One example, 1stepSwap, offers a platform that brings real-world assets onto the blockchain. It enables users to purchase shares of prominent US companies and commodities like gold or silver directly through their wallets, bypassing complex steps and intermediaries. The service’s innovative price discovery mechanism ensures trades are executed at the most favorable rates in real time, allowing investors to diversify their portfolios efficiently and quickly.
