The Federal Reserve kept its policy interest rate unchanged at its Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on October 28, as expected. However, the fact that the decision was not unanimous and that two Fed officials called for an interest rate increase was noteworthy.

The Fed voted 10 to 2 to keep its policy interest rate unchanged at 3.75%–4.00%. Fed Board member Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack dissented, calling for a 25 basis point increase.

Thus, while the Fed entered a period of pause in monetary policy after its 25 basis point interest rate hike in September, some officials within the institution were seen advocating for a tighter monetary policy to combat inflation.

FED Strengthens Assessment of the US Economy

In a statement released following the interest rate decision, the Fed revised its assessment of the pace of growth in the US economy upward.

In its previous statement, the Fed noted that economic activity was growing “at a solid pace,” but in its new statement, it said that growth was continuing “at a strong pace.”

The committee stressed that uncertainties remain high due to geopolitical developments, but domestic spending has shown resilience.

The statement indicated that productivity growth was strong, capital investment remained robust, and employment growth kept pace with labor force growth. It also noted that the unemployment rate remained largely unchanged.

Notable Change in the Fed’s Inflation Statement

While the Fed emphasized that inflation remains high, it removed a key statement from its previous meeting’s announcement.

The September announcement stated that the interest rate decision would help inflation return to the 2% target more quickly.

The new statement removed this phrase and instead stated that the accumulation of more economic data would help determine the appropriate monetary policy stance to bring inflation back to the 2% target in a timely manner.

This change suggests that the Fed will place more weight on incoming economic data in its subsequent interest rate decisions and adopt a more cautious approach to future monetary policy steps.

The Fed also reiterated its commitment to maintaining price stability.
