Spiro, the electric mobility company, plans to increase its motorcycle assembly capacity in Nigeria from 30,000 to 200,000 bikes as it prepares to expand its operations and explore local manufacturing of batteries and other components.

Prasad Sane, Spiro Nigeria’s managing director and country head, disclosed this on Friday, October 9, during the company’s media connect event in Lagos.

Sane said the company currently assembles its electric motorcycles at its plant in Sagamu, Ogun State, but plans to scale up production capacity and relocate to a new facility. The proposed expansion would increase its current assembly capacity by more than six times. However, Sane did not disclose the investment required or provide a timeline for completing the upgrade.

“We currently do Made in Nigeria. The bikes are being assembled in Nigeria, in Sagamu, where the plant is,” Sane said. “Current capacity of the plant is around 30,000 bikes, but we will be scaling up to 200,000 bikes, and we will be moving to a new location soon.”

He added that Spiro was considering developing a broader automotive manufacturing ecosystem in Nigeria, including battery and component production, to increase local participation in its supply chain.

Spiro also aims to sell 50,000 electric motorcycles by 2027

The manufacturing plan comes as the mobility company seeks to grow its presence in Nigeria, where it currently operates in Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states. Sane said the company aims to sell 50,000 electric motorcycles by 2027 and have 100,000 bikes on Nigerian roads within the next two to three years.

To support this growth, Spiro plans to expand its battery-swapping network from 104 stations to more than 200 by 2028. The stations allow riders to exchange depleted batteries for charged ones rather than wait for their motorcycles to recharge.

The company also plans to enter four additional Nigerian states in 2027, with further expansion expected in 2028.

Across Africa, Spiro reported 150,000 electric bikes on the road and 2,500 operational battery-swapping stations. It operates in Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Togo, Benin and Cameroon, and aims to expand into 11 African countries by December 2026.

The company is also preparing to introduce three-wheelers and heavy commercial vehicles as it expands beyond electric motorcycles.

If implemented, the planned manufacturing expansion could create opportunities for local suppliers and support job creation. However, the extent of these benefits will depend on how much of Spiro’s production and component sourcing takes place in Nigeria.
