HSBC has introduced RedCoin (RCHKD), its first Hong Kong-dollar stablecoin, enabling digital transactions and merchant payments for users of the PayMe app. The bank announced the launch on Friday, marking a significant step into the regulated stablecoin sector in Hong Kong.
Consumer rollout on PayMe
More than 3.3 million PayMe users are set to gain access to stablecoin wallets in the app in the coming days. HSBC stated that consumers will be able to activate their wallets and use RedCoin for peer-to-peer transfers as well as merchant payments. The new stablecoin is fully backed and redeemable at a one-to-one rate for Hong Kong dollars.
HSBC Digital Assets Custody, the bank’s digital asset safekeeping arm, will handle secure custody services for RedCoin. The bank is focused on security and transparency for users moving into the digital asset space, leveraging its established infrastructure and compliance with local regulations.
Background and regulatory framework
The launch of RedCoin follows HSBC’s approval as a stablecoin issuer in April this year. The authorization came under Hong Kong’s new dedicated regulatory framework, designed to foster safe stablecoin operations in the city.
Alongside HSBC, Anchorpoint Financial also received its stablecoin issuer license. Anchorpoint is a financial joint venture supported by Standard Chartered, Animoca Brands, and HKT, and was among the first entities approved within this regulatory scheme.
Anchorpoint rolled out its HKDAP stablecoin on HashKey Exchange in August, initially focused on institutional and professional investor clientele. HSBC’s approach is directed at the wider consumer retail market, but the bank has stated its intention to also introduce RedCoin for corporate and institutional solutions in the future.

Future expansion
HSBC’s strategy includes expanding RedCoin beyond retail uses to serve wholesale corporate and institutional clients. Plans are underway to further integrate the stablecoin into broader business applications, aligning with Hong Kong’s vision to position itself as a hub for compliant digital asset innovation.
Regional developments in stablecoin adoption are accelerating. Neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Thailand have recently announced collaborative cross-border stablecoin initiatives with Singapore, highlighting a growing trend toward regulated adoption of digital currencies.
Consumers will be able to activate stablecoin wallets and use RedCoin for everyday payments, as HSBC rolls out secure digital transactions to 3.3 million PayMe users across Hong Kong.
