  • HSBC plans to introduce its Hong Kong dollar stablecoin through PayMe and its banking app.
  • Personal transfers and merchant payments will come before business uses.
  • RedCoin has not been issued, and HSBC has not announced a launch date.

HSBC named its planned Hong Kong dollar stablecoin HSBC RedCoin on September 30, targeting a rollout before year-end. The bank will first support transfers between people and payments to merchants through PayMe and its Hong Kong banking app. It has not issued the token or announced a launch date. Corporate and institutional uses are planned for a later phase.

HSBC RedCoin Will Begin With Transfers and Merchant Payments

The phased plan starts with everyday transactions through channels HSBC customers already use. PayMe serves more than 3.3 million users, giving the bank an existing base for the rollout. Initial access will be limited to PayMe and the HSBC HK Mobile App.

HSBC RedCoin will be denominated in Hong Kong dollars. The bank has disclosed no blockchain network or public token contract address. It has also warned customers about unauthorized tokens claiming an HSBC connection.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority granted HSBC a stablecoin issuer license in April. Anchorpoint Financial received the other license. HSBC said its coin will be backed by liquid assets held in segregated accounts. info.gov.hk

HSBC RedCoin Survey Shows Demand Alongside Fraud Concerns

HSBC surveyed 1,060 Hong Kong customers in June. It found 74% recognized at least one stablecoin use case, though that does not establish willingness to use RedCoin. Digital asset trading and tokenized investments led at 57%, followed by personal transfers at 53%. Remittances and merchant payments each drew 52%.

Understanding varied: 60% identified a stablecoin as a fiat-backed digital asset, while 26% thought governments issued them. Another 10% expected interest, which Hong Kong’s current framework does not include.

Regulatory clarity topped the survey’s confidence factors at 62%. Education followed at 55%, fraud protection at 53%, cash conversion at 51%, and reserve transparency at 39%. HSBC plans guidance on scams and redemptions across its apps, website and social channels.

HSBC RedCoin has yet to enter circulation. The bank gave no date for its later corporate and institutional rollout.
