HSBC Names Its Hong Kong Stablecoin RedCoin

HSBC, Hong Kong's largest bank, has officially named its forthcoming Hong Kong dollar stablecoin HSBC RedCoin, laying out an initial rollout focused on everyday retail transactions. The announcement, made on September 30, 2026, confirms the bank's intent to bring regulated digital currency into the hands of ordinary consumers before expanding into corporate and institutional applications.

At launch, RedCoin will be available exclusively through PayMe and the HSBC HK Mobile App, keeping the rollout within HSBC's existing retail ecosystem. The stablecoin will first support person-to-person transfers and merchant payments, with corporate and institutional use cases planned for a later phase.

The move follows a stablecoin issuer licence granted to HSBC by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) in April 2026, one of only two awarded under the city's Stablecoins Ordinance. The other went to Anchorpoint Financial, a consortium involving Standard Chartered, Hong Kong Telecom, and Animoca Brands.

Survey Points to Growing Consumer Readiness

Alongside the name reveal, HSBC published results from a survey of more than 1,000 local customers conducted between June 18 and 28, 2026. Seventy-four percent of respondents recognised at least one stablecoin use case, a figure the bank cited as evidence of market readiness. Digital asset trading and tokenised investments topped the list at 57%, followed by person-to-person transfers at 53%, and cross-border remittances and merchant payments both at 52%.

Despite the appetite, the survey also highlighted hurdles. Customers pointed to fraud protection and regulatory clarity as the two biggest factors needed before wider adoption can take hold. A separate finding showed that 26% of respondents incorrectly believed stablecoins are government-issued, while around 10% assumed they would pay interest, which is not permitted under Hong Kong's regulatory framework.

"This survey confirms the strong interest among Hongkongers in embracing digital assets," said Maggie Ng, Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Hong Kong. The bank has committed to an education series designed to close knowledge gaps ahead of the formal launch.

HSBC has not disclosed the underlying blockchain network or an exact launch date, saying only that the stablecoin will be issued in the second half of 2026. RedCoin will be backed by liquid assets held separately from the bank's other funds, in line with HKMA requirements that mandate 100% reserve backing for licensed stablecoin issuers.
