TL;DR
Buyback Surge: Hyperliquid and Pump.fun drove nearly 90% of the record $638 million in 2026 token buybacks.
Token Performance: HYPE and PUMP outpaced the market with triple‑digit gains while major assets declined.
Revenue Power: Both platforms use significant portions of their revenue for buybacks, reinforcing token strength and investor confidence.
Decentralized exchange Hyperliquid and Pump.fun are driving a powerful shift in how crypto projects manage their token economies this year. Both platforms have become the central force behind a record $638 million in token buybacks across the industry, a level of spending that signals how aggressively protocols are working to support their assets during a volatile market cycle.
Record Buyback Activity Reshapes 2026 Market Dynamics
Crypto projects have spent $638 million on repurchasing their own tokens year-to-date, a sharp rise from $545 million during the same stretch in 2025. Hyperliquid and Pump.fun together account for nearly 90% of that total, with Hyperliquid contributing roughly $370 million and Pump.fun adding close to $200 million. The scale of these moves mirrors traditional stock buybacks, where companies use revenue to support share prices and reward holders.
The trend is spreading. The Ethena Foundation recently opened a vote on a fee-switch proposal that would direct 95% of its net revenue toward ENA token repurchases. ENA jumped 10.7% after the proposal went live, showing how quickly markets respond to buyback-driven value flows.
Hyperliquid and Pump.fun Tokens Outperform A Declining Market
The tokens tied to Hyperliquid and Pump.fun have surged despite a broader market downturn. HYPE is up 145%, and PUMP is up 109% year-to-date, even as Bitcoin has fallen 10% and total crypto market capitalization has dropped 11.9%. Hyperliquid and Pump.fun have benefited from strong revenue engines that consistently funnel capital back into their tokens.
Hyperliquid spends about 99% of its revenue on buybacks. The exchange reported $169 million in second-quarter revenue on Aug. 6 and allocated $141 million to HYPE repurchases. Pump.fun directs around 50% of its net protocol revenue toward buybacks and currently generates $420 million in annualized revenue based on recent averages.
Buybacks Could Shape Crypto Valuations Over The Next Two Years
Analysts say the buyback trend could have a lasting impact. Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan noted earlier in August that crypto valuations may double within two years as more protocols adopt revenue-funded buybacks and burns. Hyperliquid and Pump.fun are already demonstrating how powerful that model can be when applied at scale.
