Fee Revenue Climbs on Broader Platform Growth

Hyperliquid (@HyperliquidX), the decentralized perpetual futures exchange, reported a 31% year-over-year increase in August fee revenue, driven by rising trading volumes and a growing user base. Hyperliquid gross fees rose 31% compared to the prior year period, even as core revenue from its crypto perpetuals business faced headwinds.

The platform has steadily expanded its footprint in the decentralized derivatives market. Hyperliquid reached a record 263,666 active perpetual traders as user participation continued to grow across the platform. That figure is up sharply from roughly 150,000 active traders in January 2026 and 127,000 in August 2025.

A key driver of the broader fee growth has been Hyperliquid's HIP-3 markets, which allow traders to gain exposure to real-world assets without leaving the platform. Much of the new activity comes from real-world asset perpetuals, which track prices for assets such as oil, gold, and individual stocks. These contracts reached a record $3.6 billion in open interest in July 2026, up from about $2.6 billion in May.

HYPE Token Surges Alongside Onchain Activity

The protocol's native token $HYPE has responded to the stronger onchain activity. As of the time of writing, HYPE is trading near $74, up approximately 27% over the prior two days, reflecting renewed investor interest in the platform's growth trajectory.

Part of the token's appeal lies in how the protocol handles its fee income. Roughly 97% of protocol fees flow into the Assistance Fund, which performs automated daily HYPE buybacks from the open market, meaning nearly all trading activity on Hyperliquid directly translates into buy pressure on the token.

The exchange's broader market position also underpins the positive sentiment. Hyperliquid's 24-hour trading volume recently stood at over $20.8 billion, with open interest above $12.3 billion. The platform continues to command a dominant share of decentralized perpetuals, holding 60 to 80% market share in decentralized perpetuals, with $3.52 billion in open interest and $6.5 billion in daily perpetual volume as of mid-2026.

Looking ahead, Hyperliquid is also positioning for further product expansion. The platform formally proposed a framework for regulated pre-IPO perpetual contracts to the SEC on August 18, 2026, which would allow U.S. investors to gain price exposure to listings like SpaceX before they go public. The SEC's decision, expected in the coming months, could legitimize a significant new asset class on Hyperliquid.
