The Indian government plans to release a major public plan to regulate artificial intelligence within the next thirty days. Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Thursday that the country needs immediate rules to manage the fast spread of smart computer systems. The state will publish a consultation paper to gather ideas from ordinary citizens and business leaders before writing the official laws.

The upcoming rules will target five main areas. These include public safety, keeping human needs first, teaching workers new skills, making the technology available to everyone, and stopping harmful digital content like fake videos. Minister Vaishnaw clarified that standard laws are not enough to control this new technology.

Indian officials have always supported AI regulation

Indian officials had already been discussing whether the country’s existing laws were enough to deal with the risks created by AI. In July, MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan said the government was considering a separate legal framework for AI and that the time was right to start looking at dedicated legislation.

In January, Vaishnaw also said India needed a “techno-legal” approach to AI, combining technical safeguards with laws to deal with issues such as deepfakes and other risks.

Sudeep Shrivastava, COO of the IndiaAI Mission, has also argued that India should have a say in discussions over AI safety standards. He said those rules should not be shaped only by the US and China, given that they will affect other countries as AI becomes more widely used.

Government plans to control AI use may frustrate local builders

India currently relies on foreign computer models because the country lacks the servers and chips needed to build its own powerful software.

Some local creators feel the government is restricting an industry that barely exists. An internet user named Gupta highlighted this frustration online, stating: “India doesn’t even have any AI scene and they are already regulating it”

Building strict laws before building the actual technology could stop local startup companies from ever growing.

Also, another user on X @Berit, pointed to the difference in how the government prioritizes foreign software threats over local digital money markets, noting:

“We will get AI regulation before Crypto regulation. Crypto has no future in India.”

India’s AI rules follow a growing global regulatory push

The same day Minister Vaishnaw announced the Indian plan, privacy officials in the United Kingdom opened up an investigation into advanced computer programs and secured safety promises from ten global software builders.

A digital market watcher @ En Acta noticed this pattern online, stating:

“The same day the UK’s ICO published commitments from ten foundation model developers and opened a call for evidence on agentic AI. Regulators keep converging on the same questions at once.”

As foreign technology companies continue to release AI software, countries are also tightening control over their digital borders.

Meanwhile, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said India could have the world’s largest developer community by 2030, showing the country’s growing pool of technology workers as a major advantage in the AI race.
