Revenue Climbs to New High as Network Activity Grows

The Internet Computer Protocol, developed by @dfinity, recorded a new all-time high in monthly onchain revenue on October 4, 2026, with figures surpassing $360,000. Live data at the time showed a consistent 1.10% daily increase, pointing to sustained and growing demand for the network's computational resources.

The milestone is closely tied to rising consumption of "cycles," the fuel that powers smart contract execution on the Internet Computer. Cycles act as the computational resource used to execute actions on the network, with canister smart contracts consuming resources in the form of CPU cycles for execution, bandwidth for routing messages, and memory for persisted data. ICP tokens are converted into cycles, which are then used by developers to pay for installing smart contracts and for the resources those contracts consume, including storage, CPU, and bandwidth.

The revenue uptick follows a broader period of network growth. In the week ending September 29, 2026, the network generated over $85,000 in protocol revenue, a metric tied directly to computation and storage consumed by applications. The jump to more than $360,000 in monthly revenue suggests that pace accelerated materially through early October.

How the Cycles Model Drives Revenue

Unlike most blockchains, where end users pay gas fees directly, the Internet Computer uses a reverse gas model in which developers pre-pay costs by loading canisters with computation cycles, meaning users can interact with a decentralized application without needing tokens or dealing with seed phrases. The ICP token is the only token that can be used to purchase cycles and fuel smart contracts for computation. When ICP is used to purchase cycles, it is burned and removed from circulating supply, creating a deflationary mechanism for the token.

The network has been building momentum across multiple metrics in 2026. The network reached one billion transactions in Q1 2026 and supports roughly 980,000 deployed canister smart contracts with 1.24 million active wallets. A record onchain revenue figure adds a key financial dimension to that broader activity picture, signalling that usage is not just growing in volume but also translating into real economic output for the protocol.

For $ICP holders and ecosystem participants, the revenue record reinforces the network's argument that onchain computation at scale is a viable and expanding business, even as the token itself continues to trade well below its 2021 all-time high.
