DFINITY Clears Early ICANN Hurdle for .icp Domain
@dfinity's Internet Computer ($ICP) has passed an initial review stage set by @ICANN for the .icp generic top-level domain (gTLD), moving the application toward inclusion on the 2026 global sunrise registry candidate list. The milestone places the Internet Computer project among a competitive field of applicants seeking to reshape the domain name system.
The timing is significant. ICANN published its full list of new gTLD applications for the 2026 Round on October 7, 2026, revealing applied-for strings and applying entities.Known as "Reveal Day," the published information includes all applied-for primary strings, a list of preliminary contention sets, and the public portions of each application. The application submission period attracted a total of 1,663 applications before closing on August 12, 2026.
Clearing the initial review is an early but meaningful step in a lengthy process. Applicants must demonstrate technical capacity and undergo a multi-stage evaluation process before any domain can go live. Following Reveal Day, applicants have two weeks to elect a replacement string if eligible, after which ICANN will publish the final list of strings proceeding through the programme on String Confirmation Day, scheduled for November 17, 2026.
What .icp Could Mean for the Decentralized Web
The practical implications of a live .icp domain extend well beyond a branding exercise. If the application progresses to delegation, the .icp extension would create a direct link between the traditional DNS root structure and the Internet Computer's end-to-end decentralized smart contract infrastructure. In practical terms, browser traffic could be routed directly to smart contracts and decentralized applications running on the network, removing the need for intermediary corporate web hosting or centralized domain registration services.
The New gTLD Program is an ICANN community-driven initiative that supports the continued expansion of the DNS, aiming to foster diversity, encourage competition, and enhance the utility of internet addresses. For a blockchain project, securing a native gTLD would represent a rare degree of legitimacy within the traditional internet governance framework.
The road ahead remains long. It is expected to take a minimum of two years to launch the first top-level domains through the programme.Based on ICANN's projections for the volume of applications received, programme completion is estimated around June 2030. DFINITY's ability to sustain momentum through evaluation, any objections, and contracting stages will determine whether .icp ultimately enters the DNS root zone.
