Apple’s first foldable iPhone Duo faces possible launch shortages ahead of Oct. 16 preorders, with reported assembly yields only slightly above 60%.

Key Points:

  • Final assembly yields reportedly stood just above 60% as of Sept. 17.
  • Display and hinge manufacturing problems could constrain initial availability.
  • One analyst cut his 2026 shipment estimate from 7 million to 6 million.

iPhone Duo Production

MacRumors [reported] (https://www.macrumors.com/2026/09/29/iphone-duo-reportedly-facing-production-problems/)** Sept. 29, citing China’s Jiemian News, that final assembly yields at Foxconn were only slightly above 60% as of Sept. 17. A source close to the supply chain said reaching mature yields under Apple’s current quality requirements could take another six months to a year.

Foxconn has reportedly been adjusting equipment, assembly processes and production settings as it scales manufacturing.

Jiemian News also described low yields, delivery delays and design changes involving foldable OLED panels from Samsung Display and hinge components, leaving less time for assembly adjustments. Suppliers were reportedly watching whether Apple would relax any quality requirements to increase output.

A separate report from MyDrivers said a contract manufacturer had asked Apple to prioritize either higher output or more consistent yields. Producing more phones could increase defective units and scrap costs, according to that account. Apple says the hinge contains more than 100 components and a 3D-printed cover, while Jiemian News reported that Apple reassessed an earlier Liquid Metal approach.

Jiemian News cited a supply chain source who placed Apple’s global stocking target for 2026 at 6 million to 8 million units. A retail source separately said the company's sales guidance exceeded 5 million units. The publication compared the stocking target with the 20 million to 30 million units a single iPhone Pro model typically ships over a full product cycle.

Jeff Pu Forecast

Analyst Jeff Pu reduced his estimate for 2026 iPhone Duo shipments from 7 million to 6 million, according to a Sept. 15 report from 9to5Mac. He attributed the revision to “hinge constraints,” rather than a lack of demand, adding to concerns that manufacturing capacity could limit early deliveries.

Pu also estimated combined shipments of 72 million iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max devices in 2026, 12 times his forecast for the foldable phone.

That comparison highlights the smaller expected production scale, but it does not establish whether the Duo will sell out. Actual availability will depend on how many units Apple can supply and how many customers place orders.

Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on Sept. 9 with a $1,999 U.S. starting price, making it the company’s first foldable smartphone. Its 5.4-inch outer display opens into a 7.6-inch inner screen, while the announced schedule calls for preorders on Oct. 16 and general availability on Oct. 23. Those dates were set before the reports raised questions about the pace of production.
