A 12-Year-Old Wallet Stirs

A Bitcoin wallet beginning with "14vMEC" moved 26.96 $BTC on August 10, after sitting untouched for 12.5 years. The address first received BTC on January 31, 2014, when Bitcoin traded well under $1,000, and held for 12.5 years before a single transaction swept the balance to a fresh address in block 961845 at 07:03 UTC.The move could potentially realize a gain of about $1.73 million, a 7,975% return on an average basis near $803 per coin.

Galaxy Research flagged the transfer on X but did not confirm a sale. The coins landed in a fresh address, leaving the holder's next move unknown.

Not an Isolated Move

The 14vMEC wallet is not the only ancient address waking up. A long-dormant Bitcoin wallet that received 49.97 $BTC in 2011, when the cryptocurrency traded around $10, moved nearly 50 BTC worth about $3.2 million just days earlier. The coins were sent to a SegWit address that has previously funneled Bitcoin to institutional brokerage FalconX and received funds from Nexo and Prime Trust-linked wallets, though the newly moved BTC had not yet left that address.

Neither movement confirms that a wave of large-scale selling is imminent. Each wallet reactivation can reflect a different motive, including security upgrades, estate planning, or simple portfolio rebalancing, and blockchain data alone cannot distinguish between them.

The broader pattern is hard to ignore. Old coins have been stirring repeatedly over the past two years: a cluster of wallets dormant since 2013 moved $2 billion in Bitcoin in a single January 2024 session, and another whale relocated 3,000 $BTC worth over $349 million after a decade of silence. When dormant wallets move, markets react quickly, with one 12,000 BTC transfer in November 2025 pushing Bitcoin down roughly 2% within hours.

These awakenings draw attention because they show supply moving that most observers assumed was lost. Whether that supply is heading toward a sale, a custody upgrade, or simply a long-overdue key rotation remains, for now, an open question.
