One Year Since Bitcoin's Record Peak

October 6, 2026 marks exactly one year since Bitcoin ($BTC) set its all-time high. According to CoinMarketCap data, Bitcoin's all-time high of $126,198.07 was reached on October 6, 2025. The rally was driven by a combination of forces: strong spot ETF inflows, institutional accumulation, and supportive U.S. policy, including the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve established in March 2025.

The climb to that peak was not a sudden move. Bitcoin had already set records at $111,814 in May, $122,838 in July, and $124,128 in August before pushing above $126,000 in October 2025. For a brief window, sentiment was firmly bullish and a new era for the asset seemed within reach.

It did not last long. Bitcoin peaked at $126,000 in October 2025, but a tariff shock and a wave of liquidations starting on October 10 pulled BTC below $105,000.Bitcoin fell roughly 18% from its October 6, 2025 peak within about a month, and continued lower into December 2025 before partially recovering.

Where Does $BTC Stand Now, and What Comes Next?

Twelve months on, Bitcoin remains well below its record. As of the first anniversary of the peak, Bitcoin was trading around $86,189, approximately 32% below its record and down 30% over the past year. That said, the scale of the pullback is relatively mild compared to previous cycles. Bitcoin fell about 85% after its 2013 peak, about 84% after 2017, and about 77% after 2021.

The path back to a new all-time high may take time. Historical cycles suggest Bitcoin has taken 28 to 38 months to surpass each of its last three peaks, making a new all-time high before late 2027 unlikely based on prior patterns. Near term, macro conditions are a key variable. The Federal Reserve's meeting on October 27-28 could play a crucial role in determining whether Bitcoin continues its summer rally or starts to pull back, particularly given rising oil prices above $100 a barrel and slowing ETF inflows.

For now, $BTC continues to consolidate. Bitcoin opened October 2026 trading near $84,800. Historically, October, nicknamed "Uptober," has seen Bitcoin rise in six of the past eight years, though 2018 and 2025 ended with losses. Whether history repeats itself in 2026 remains an open question.
