XRP investors are closely monitoring a surge in sell orders clustered between $28 and $32 on Coinbase, as highlighted by crypto analyst Jared Johnston. Johnston attributes these concentrated sell walls to large holders, or “whales,” which he believes may be attempting to trigger sales from retail investors in advance of a significant price movement.

Whale sell walls and retail reaction

Johnston identified substantial sell orders by major players on Coinbase, with transactions valued in the tens and hundreds of millions of dollars, primarily within the $28 to $32 range. He noted that this activity broadly aligns with price targets recently shared by known community figures who predict an upward move to $33.

Johnston claims this overlap in activity and projections is unlikely to be coincidental. According to him, institutional actors may be creating these “sell walls” to lure smaller investors into exiting their positions prematurely, particularly as prices jump rapidly toward the low $30s. He suggests that this strategy relies on retail holders being tempted to lock in profits at price levels they previously did not anticipate.

Johnston stated, “They want to bait XRP holders with a rapid pump up into the low $30 range,” implying that this move is intended to shake assets out of the hands of retail participants before any larger appreciation.

The $10,000 XRP argument

Johnston referenced earlier statements by Ripple co-founders David Schwartz and Arthur Brito, who allegedly suggested that XRP would need to reach as high as $10,000 to serve efficiently at scale following early meetings with the White House. Although Johnston stopped short of making any recommendations regarding selling or holding XRP, he warned holders that selling at $32 or $33 could prove to be a costly decision if higher valuations later materialize.

He highlighted, “If they can get it from you for $32 or $33, that’s much better than $10,000,” cautioning investors about surrendering their positions too soon.

Mini dictionary: Sell wall, a significant block of sell orders at a specific price level, often placed by large holders to create resistance and potentially trigger a market reaction from smaller investors.

Community reactions and skepticism

The discussion generated diverse responses among XRP supporters. One community member indicated that he intends to lend his XRP for passive income rather than sell. Another advocated for patience and suggested holding long-term is the best approach for navigating volatility in the digital asset market.

A separate comment questioned whether cryptocurrency exchanges would permit long positions acquired at $1 to be wiped out should prices escalate. Johnston replied, emphasizing that market makers have the ability to manipulate both short and long positions actively.

Skepticism about the $10,000 price target also surfaced within the community. Johnston responded by stating that while the current market capitalization would make such a price unattainable today, future developments in market structure or adoption could eventually make higher values possible.

XRP, the native digital currency of the Ripple network, has long attracted attention for its role in cross-border payments. Whale activity and shifting market sentiment continue to influence its price action, with industry voices urging caution amid current volatility.
