Jeonbuk Bank, a subsidiary of JB Financial Group, has initiated Bitcoin-backed loans for corporate clients, marking a first among South Korea’s commercial banks.

First Bitcoin-backed Loans in South Korea

South Korean media reported that Jeonbuk Bank now accepts Bitcoin (BTC) as collateral for loans denominated in the Korean won. This service is currently restricted to businesses seeking operational capital rather than being available to individual consumers.

To manage the risks associated with digital asset collateral, Jeonbuk Bank partnered with a specialized custodian to securely hold the Bitcoin deposited by borrowers. The institution stated that the arrangement allows the bank to provide loans without directly storing or holding customers’ cryptocurrency assets.

Bank officials indicated that loan applications are assessed individually, and details such as the approved loan amounts, interest rates, and specific loan-to-value ratios have not been publicly revealed. The bank confirmed that at least one corporate loan has already been issued under this new program, but declined to identify the borrower.

Regulatory Framework Supports Innovation

The launch of these loans came after South Korea amended its Civil Enforcement Rules, with the revised regulations taking effect on October 1. The Supreme Court outlined new procedures to regulate the seizure and liquidation of virtual assets in cases where a borrower defaults.

Should a default occur, the court can order the sale of the pledged Bitcoin, and Jeonbuk Bank is entitled to recover its outstanding loan balance from the sale proceeds. This framework enables banks to manage crypto-backed lending without the need to directly take custody of the underlying digital assets.

A Jeonbuk Bank representative explained that the company has adopted a mechanism ensuring that loan recovery is executed through the proceeds from court-ordered cryptocurrency sales, eliminating the necessity for the bank itself to hold or liquidate the assets.

Industry Context

The development positions Jeonbuk Bank as a pioneer in integrating cryptocurrencies into the mainstream banking system in South Korea. This move comes at a time when trading activity and profit margins at local crypto exchanges have seen significant declines.

Neither Jeonbuk Bank nor JB Financial Group has released additional statements about their plans for expanding crypto-backed lending or extending the service to a wider group of clients in the future.

Jeonbuk Bank implemented a system that lets the bank recover loans through court-ordered cryptocurrency sales, rather than directly handling the digital assets.

Market participants are closely observing how this product is received and whether other banks will follow Jeonbuk Bank’s lead in entering the crypto-backed loan market.
