Tron founder Justin Sun has sought sanctions against World Liberty Financial and its lawyers in a lawsuit related to his $45 million investment in WLFI.
The legal battle between Tron founder Justin Sun and World Liberty Financial, a crypto startup linked to the Trump family, has entered a new phase. Sun alleges that World Liberty Financial failed to disclose its ownership ties to the United Arab Emirates in a timely manner and is seeking sanctions against the company and its legal team.
Sun was one of World Liberty Financial’s first and largest investors. In November 2024, Sun agreed to purchase $30 million worth of WLFI tokens, later increasing his total investment to $45 million. However, the relationship between the parties deteriorated after Sun’s tokens were frozen.
In the lawsuit filed in April, Sun alleged that the investment decision was made based on misleading statements and that his access to the tokens he purchased was illegally blocked. World Liberty Financial had previously defended its decision to freeze the tokens. The allegations have not yet been decided by the court.
At the heart of the new dispute are disclosures regarding the company’s citizenship and ownership structure. According to The Sun, World Liberty initially only disclosed its Florida connection to the federal court. The company later clarified that its chain of ownership includes 22 entities with connections to Florida, Delaware, Puerto Rico, and the United Arab Emirates.
This change could affect the federal court’s jurisdiction to hear the case because both the plaintiff and the defendant have foreign connections. World Liberty argues the court lacks jurisdiction, while The Sun maintains this information should have been disclosed before months of legal expenses could be incurred.
Sun stated that it plans to reopen the case in California state court after the sanctions request is finalized. The court has not yet determined whether the company intentionally concealed its ownership structure.
